Formerly known as Al-hilal (land of the crescent moon), Taragarh Palace, was built in the early 1930s as a resort well suited for summers. It was bought by the royal family of Jammu & Kashmir in 1951 for the dowager Maharani who lived there for several years. It is now run as a hotel by the present royal family.

Built by the Nawab of Bhawalpur in 1937, Developed as a Heritage Hotel in 1971, It is now run as a Heritage hotel by the present royal family. The then Nawab of Bahawalpur built large European-style summer residence for himself up in the cool Himalayan region of Kangra district. He laid out lush green gardens, built a glass pleasure pavilion and a mosque and christened his country palace Al-hilal.

Dharamshala India points of interest

St. John's Church: St. John's Church is one of the major attractions, which is a testimony of the bygone British Era. Constructed in 1852, this historic church built in Gothic style is famous for its tapering high windows and a bell in the compound.

Bhagsunag Waterfall:  Situated at walking distance of 1.5 Kms from Hotel Triund, Bhagsunag Waterfall is at its pristine glory during monsoon. The view of unsullied water gushing out of the waterfall and the mist emanating from the fall about 20 feet is indeed a delightful experience. It is a marvelous location to live with nature enjoying the Himalayan serene nature and rejuvenating soft but cool breeze.

Mcleodganj : Several thousand Tibetan exiles have now settled in the area, and most live in and around Mcleodganj in Upper Dharamshala, where they have built monasteries, temples and schools. Mcleodganj is sometimes known as 'Little Lhasa", after the Tibetan capital city, or 'Dhasa' (a compound of 'Dharamshala' and 'Lhasa'). It has become an important tourist destination with many hotels and restaurants, leading to growth in tourism and commerce.

Dalai Lama Temple: The Dalai Lama temple is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in Himachal Pradesh. It is just a short walk from the McLeod Ganj bus stand and is quite accessible from the major parts of the district. The whole vicinity is decorated with colorful prayer flags and this makes it perfect for long serene walks. You will find a lot of good statues and the atmosphere is something which lures people to come back again and again. The sight of monks meditating peacefully and chanting verses is something that everyone must experience.

Bhagsu nag temple: The temple of Bhagsunag is dedicated to Lord Shiva of Hindu religious. This ancient temple is located 2 kms away from Mcleodganj. This is a beautiful and famous ancient temple of Lord Shiva with full of natural scenes having a cold running water tank and springs.

Dal Lake: The name 'Dal Lake' is taken from Kashmir's Dal Lake, Situated at is a small mid-altitude lake near the village of Tota Rani in Kangra district (Himachal Pradesh) in northern India.Situated at a height of 1775m above sea-level, Dal Lake comes under the region of Kangra district, which is 11 km away from Dharamshala. Nestling amidst lush green forests of deodar trees, the Dal Lake is famous for its scenic beauty and pilgrimage center.

Naddi village: Naddi view point Situated at 2,000 meters above the sea level and about 1.5 kilometers from Dal Lake a modern picnic spot is developing fast at Naddi village. It is the only place in Dharamshala from where an open view of mountains and wide valleys on Dhauladhars southern side can be seen. It is also a starting point for a trek to Kareri Lake, Guna Temple and Triund.

Places to visit in Palampur

Tea gardens:  Palampur is said to be "The tea capital of Northern India" because of the tea gardens are a major attraction here. As you go for a drive in this hill station you would see tea gardens all around. The lush of greenery and the subtle smell of tea are just what are needed to have a refreshing day. Tea production is done on such a large scale that these tea plantations have found a place in the international maps as well. Regions around Palampur also produce tea in large quantities. Darbari, Bageshwari, Bahar and Malhar are some of the brand names of the tea produced in Palampur.

Chamunda Devi Temple: This temple is located at a distance of 10 km from Palampur and is regarded as a very important religious center. It is said to be one of the 51 Shakti Peethas as the main shrines are those of Goddess Durga and Goddess Chamunda. It is a peaceful place where one can go and meditate with no disturbances. It is believed that this temple was built more than 700 years ago. A kund (pond) placed in the premises of Chamunda Devi Temple is said to have sacred water. Numerous paintings of different Gods and Goddesses are seen on the walls of the temple. This temple also features an Ayurvedic dispensary and a library. The setting of the temple is beautiful in its own way which is surrounded with mountains, rivers and forests.

Saurabh Van Vihar: Named after a brave army officer, Captain Saurabh Kalia, Saurabh Van Vihar is a beautiful garden. This garden is managed by the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department. Over 151 species of herbs can be found in these gardens. It covers an area of 35 acres. Picnic sheds, Children’s Park, Water streams, Health trails, and Open Air Theatre, Bamboosetum and Tiger Hill Bridge help cover the large area the garden stretches across.

Nevgal Khad: Nevgal Khad is located at a distance of just 2 km from the main town. It is a popular attraction of Palampur, popularly known as “Bundla Chasm”. It is a perfect picnic spot with a 300 m wide stream flowing in the region. This spot offers a nice view of the snow-capped Dhauladhar ranges. The surrounding stream becomes serene during the monsoons.

Dhauladhar National Park: This famous National Park is also known as Gopalpur Zoo, Located at a distance of 13 km from Palampur. It is one of the chief attractions that draw attention of wildlife enthusiasts and also the major attractions of the destination. . It was set up by the wildlife department of Himachal Pradesh Government over an area of 30 acres. Tourists visiting the mini zoo situated in the complex can spot animals like leopards, black bears, angora rabbits, Asiatic lion, sambhar, red fox and varieties of deers etc.

Tsuglagkhang: Tsuglagkhang is the abode of His Holiness Dalai Lama. This complex houses Namgyal Monastery where thousands of pilgrims offer prayers. The most unique feature of this   monastery is its diversity of practice. It also houses 3 metre high bronze statues of Sakyamun Buddha, Valokitesvara and Padmasambhava. Situated next to the Tsuglagkhang Temple, Kalachakr Temple is open to the public. The Dalai Lama uses this temple as his base for public teaching.

Dharamshala tourism best time visit

For enjoying snow-white (December to February): During this time the temperature tends to dip below -1 °C. In winters and Dharamshala are so freezing, but if you enjoy the cold and snow-white mountains, then this is a beautiful time to visit. Remember to carry lots of woolens and protection against chilly winds.

For Couple (July to September): July to September is the best time for enjoy the romantic rainfall in the hills when the mountains are at their greenest. But do remember that the terrain can get pretty tricky in the monsoon so you have to be prepared for road blocks due to continuous rainfall.

For trekking tours (March to May): Summer months are perfect for a trip to the hills when the temperatures range somewhere between 22°C and 35°C. It’s ideal time for trekking tours on scenic trails dotted with flowers in full bloom. Most tourists prefer going to Dharamshala at this time so it’s also the most crowded. It’s also a good idea to plan your trip around the Buddhist Losar Festival that takes place in February or March.

For adventure activities (September to November): Rains stop around September and the weather is pleasant for sightseeing as well as other adventure activities such as trekking and camping. But keep in mind that the nights start getting chilly at this time so you must carry adequate layers to keep yourself warm.

Andretta pottery

Andretta pottery is situated between the old Shuahk hills and the towering range of the Dholadhar Himalaya. It is a production studio of pottery making that is attractively designed earthen slipware in which provides 3 month courses for aspiring potters. Andretta Pottery and Craft Society were started in 1983.

Andretta Pottery is run by Mansimran "Mini" Singh, son of famous potter Gurcharan Singh. These courses include accommodation, food and tuition. The cost is 90,000 Rupees (All Inclusive) (£1160/$1600US at current rate of exchange). And for 2017 it will be 1,20,000 Rupees (All Inclusive and in pound as per current exchange rates).
