1. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary – Munnar, Kerala ( South India)

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a unique protected area located in the rain shadow region in the eastern slope of Western Ghats, adjoining Tamilnadu. The area is diverse in eco systems and rich in ethnic cultural heritage. A unique thorny scrub forest with xerophyte species, Chinnar is the habitat for the endangered Giant Grizzled Squirrel of India. Their total number here would be less than 200.

Located in the rain shadow area of the Western Ghats, unlike other sanctuaries in Kerala, Chinnar gets only less than two months of rain every year. Rich in wildlife, the mixed deciduous forests here are ideal for trekking.  

The 90 km sq sanctuary is unique with its floral, ecological, geomorphologic and cultural significance. This sanctuary is one among the 12 protected areas of Kerala. 34 species of Mammals live here, including many Panthers and Spotted deer, 50 -60 Indian Elephants, Gaur, Tigers, Sambar Deer, Common langur, Bonnet Macaque, Hanuman monkey, threatened Nilgiri Tahr, vulnerable Rusty-spotted Cats and about 240 of the only vulnerable Grizzled Giant Squirrels in Kerala, 245 species of birds including Yellow-throated Bulbuls.

Dandeli, a small sleepy town in the western ghats of North-West India in the state of Karnataka is really proud of beholding the magnanimous wild land under the tiger project. Chikhaldara Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Amaravati district of Maharashtra and forms one of the popular excursions from the Amravati city.

5. Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary – Goa

The Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Goan town of Mollem. With a total area of 240 sq kms, this is the largest of Goa's four protected wildlife areas, and contains within it The Molem National Park. 6. Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary – Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu

Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park is a protected area located in the Anaimalai Hills of Pollachi, Valparai and Udumalpet taluks of Coimbatore District and Tirupur District, Tamil Nadu state, South India. With an area of 958 sq.KM, it is rich in flora and fauna.This protected area constitutes the most important watershed for the agricultural economy and power supply. Major reservoirs like Parambikulam, Aliyar, Thirumurthi, Upper Aliyar, Kadambarai, Sholayar and Amravati are fed by the perennial rivers which originate from the Sanctuary. The ever-changing topography of this wildlife sanctuary consist dry scrub forests, savannah forests, moist deciduous and evergreen forests and grasslands at high elevations. Teak used to be plentiful in these forests and as a source of revenue. By 1856, efforts were made to regenerate these plantations. Wildlife reserve provides habitat for animals such as panthers, tigers, elephants, spotted deer, civet cats, and wild boars. Besides, the region is referred as birder's paradise as it houses contrasting varieties of birds, which include The Black Headed Oriole, Rocket-tailed Drongo, Tree Pie, Spotted Dove and Red Whiskered Bulbul.

7. Kalakkad Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary – Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu

Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve ocated in the Southern Western Ghats in Tirunelveli district and Kanyakumari District in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu,  Kalakkad is the 17th Tiger Reserve in India and the only one in Tamil Nadu, was declared as Tiger Reserve in 1988. This includes two contiguous Sanctuaries namely Kalakad Sanctuary and Mundanthurai Sanctuary and a part of Kanyakumari Sanctuary. The total area of the Tiger Reserve is 895 Sq.KM. This Reserve has been identified as one among the Type-1 Tiger Conservation Units (TCU) representing the tropical moist evergreen forests worldwide. 273 bird species, 81 reptile species and 77 mammal species are also there in this Tiger Reserve. 10. Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary – Wayanad, Kerala

Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Chakkittappara and Koorachundu revenue villages of Quilandy Taluk in Kozhikode District of Kerala. Covering a total of 74.215015 sq.km, the sanctuary is a part of the Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot contiguous with the forests of Ladysmith Reserved Forests and Kurichiar Mala of Kalpeta Forest Range of South Wayanad Forest Division. Rich in bio-diversity, the sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and forms an integral part of the Wayanad Elephant Reserve under Project Elephant.  This sanctuary is a safe haven for scores of globally endangered mammals, birds, reptiles, fishes and amphibians. Larger mammals such as gaurs, elephants, tigers and endemic primates such as the Nilgiri langur are to be found in the Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is spread across a whopping 74 square kilometers in three villages in the Kozhikode District. This is the 16th wildlife sanctuary in Kerala and its aim is to conserve and nurture the rare species of flora and fauna found here.
