More About Varanasi++

More About Kashi Vishwanath Temple

Benares is older than history, older than tradition, even older than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together" Mark Twain. Varanasi, called 'Kashi' in the scriputures and popularly known as "Benaras", is said to be the oldest living city in the world with a glorious history that goes back to thousands of years. Believed to be the greatest  'Tirth' or crossing place between the earth and heaven. For a Hindu, to visit Varanasi and bath in the sacred water of the Ganges, is to be cleansed of the sins of thousands of past births.

The combination of Kashi, the holy city, Ganga, the celestial river and Shiva, the supreme God makes Varanasi an immortal destination. A great cultural centre, notably in the field of learning, especially of religion, philosophy, Yoga, Ayurveda, Astrology and Indian classical music. But there is much more to Varanasi than temples, Ghats, Galis(narrow lanes).

Day 1 – Morning Visit Ghats of Varanasi –

Day 1 will be spent in Boat ride Early morning on River Ganges visiting all the bathing ghats followed by walk through the narrow lanes visiting the Golden Temple (old Vishwanath Temple) and Annapurna Devi Temple. In case you wish to perform some rituals/pinda dana for your ancestors you may perform this morning.

Visit  Spectacular long sweep of Ghats on the holy Ganga, which are unique and creates a fascinating sight, best viewed at dawn. Life, in almost panoramic detail, unfolds here from dawn to dusk as a steady stream of devotees, swelling to thousands on auspicious days, perform rituals. Varanasi's principal attraction is the long string of bathing Ghats which line the west bank of ganges.

There are over 100 Ghats in all, of which Dasashwamedh Ghat is the most striking, near by are the Manikarnika and the Harishchandra Ghats where cremations take place.

The Assi Ghat is further upstream, Panchganga, Tulsi Ghat, Dandi and Kali Ghats, Kedar Ghat, Man Mandir Ghat, Mir Ghat and Gai Ghats are other important ghats.

The best way to enjoy Varanasi is by boat, which are available on hire at most of the Ghats.

Day 1 - Afternoon - Enjoy Varanasi Lanes –

Varanasi is the city of temples, Ghats and Galis (narrow lanes). The serpentine narrow lanes of this city mirror the typical life style of the inhabitants. Some of the famous Galis are Vishwanath Gali, Kachauri Gali, Thatheri Bazar, Khoa Gali, Satti Bazaar, Phool Bazaar etc.

Varanasi is said to be the place where the first Jyotirlinga, the fiery pillar of light by which Lord Shiva manifested his supremacy over other gods, broke through the earth's crust. More than the Ghats and even the river Ganga, it is the Shivalinga installed in the temple that remains the devotional focus of Varanasi. Open only to Hindus. The 'Arti' is performed here at different times and by different names in a grand manner and is worth seeing. The Mangala Arti at 3.00 a.m., Bhog Arti at 12 noon, Saptarishi Arti at 7.00 p.m., Shringar Arti at 09.30 p.m., and the Shayan Arti at 10.30 p.m.
