PADDY FIELDS: You can see rice fields in Kuttanad region between Thottappally and Alleppey,

Watch BACKWATER BIRDS from Alleppey House Boat:

The main attractions are local birds like the waterfowl, Cormorant cuckoo, egret, heron and the water duck, as well as the migratory Siberian cranes.White necked stork, etc can see During October-May, Lesser Pied King fisher is another common bird in the lake.

Great Indian Hornbill is seen in evergreen areas. The largest population in western Ghat is at Kumarakom, The Woodpecker is the resident of the deciduous forest. Brahminy Kite is seen singly or in pairs. The sights of especially the flocks of parrots hovering in the paddy fields especially those fields with rice stalks in the bloom. See the Magic of CHINESE FISHING NETS from your House Boat:

You can see Chinese fishing nets in Ashtamudi Lake and Kayamkulam Lake Between Kollam and Thrikkunnappuzha. Constructed out of Teak wood and Bamboo poles, they work on the principle of balance. Normally using nighttime for fishing.

In the Indian State of Kerala, there are unusual form of fishing — shore operated lift nets.Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20 m or more across. Each structure is at least 10 m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end. Each installation is operated by a team of up to six fishermen.

The system is sufficiently balanced that the weight of a man walking along the main beam is sufficient to cause the net to descend into the sea. The net is left for a short time, possibly just a few minutes, before it is raised by pulling on ropes. The catch is usually modest: a few fish and crustaceans — these may be sold to passers by within minutes.

The system of counterweights is most ingenious. Rocks, each 30 cm or so in diameter are suspended from ropes of different lengths. As the net is raised, some of the rocks one-by-one come to rest on a platform thereby keeping everything in balance.

Each installation has a limited operating depth. Consequently, an individual net cannot be continually operated in tidal waters. Different installations will be operated depending on the state of the tide.

It is received wisdom that the nets are Chinese in origin. This is not as improbable as the 5,000 km distance from China might suggest — Kochi is a very important centre for the spice trade attracting traders from far and wide. Some suppose that the nets were introduced by the Chinese explorer Zheng He.

The Chinese fishing nets have become a very popular tourist attraction, their size and elegant construction is very photogenic and the slow rhythm of their operation is quite hypnotic.

In addition, Buy your priced Fish and these can be taken only a short distance to a street shop to cook it.

Lunch and dinner will be prepared and served onboard.

After breakfast, transfer to Cochin. Check in at the hotel upon arrival.Go for sightseeing of Cochin, which includes the St.Francis Church, Jewish Synagogue, Dutch Palace and Chinese fishing net.

Cochin Site Seeing Tour

Jew Town

Aromatic Jew Town is the center of spice trade in Kochi and the air is filled with the heady waft of masala. Spend some time wandering through the streets and lanes, and exploring the antique stores. It's a fabulous neighborhood for photography. These days, you won't find many Jews left there though. They've been replaced by an influx of Kashmiri shopkeepers who hawk their wares to tourists. However, the Pardesi (Foreigner -- White Jew) Synagogue remains in use and is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth. Its interior is resplendent with chandeliers, gold pulpit and imported floor tiles.

Mattancherry

Mattancherry is another old neighborhood full of colonial buildings. You'll find it fascinating if you're into history. The main attraction there is the Mattancherry Dutch Palace, built by the Portuguese and presented to the Raja of Kochi in 1555, then renovated by the Dutch in 1663. It lacks the grandeur that you'd expect of a palace. Yet, there's a small museum and some rare art inside, including paintings of previous kings and some beautiful murals from the Hindu epics.

St Francis Church

This landmark church in Fort Kochi is believed to be the oldest European-built church in India. However, it's most famous for the fact that it was once the burial site of explorer Vasco de Gama, who died in Kochi in 1524 (his remains were later taken back to Portugal). The church was originally built by the Portuguese in 1503, and was subsequently claimed by the Dutch and British, before passing into Indian hands.

Princess Street

The happening Princess Street is the place to go for people watching, cafes, restaurants, bookstores, tea shops, art galleries, and souvenirs. It's one of the oldest streets in Fort Kochi and has become the main tourist strip. You'll also find grocery stores there, so you can to restock on any essential items. It's a great destination for an evening walk.

Kerala Folklore Theater and Museum

If you want to learn about Kerala's culture, then it's worth making the journey to this privately owned museum, located on the outskirts of Ernakulam. Opened in 2009, the Museum's three floors are packed full of artifacts that showcase the state's heritage. Its architecture is magnificent, as too is its entrance made from the remnants of a temple and wooden carvings. Kerala art and dance forms are a focus, with stage performances taking place at 6.30 p.m. daily. More »

Kathakali Performance

Kathakali is a very unusual and ancient form of dance-drama that's traditional to Kerala. The look, with its red bloodshot eyes, borders on grotesque. The movements of the dance are subtle, yet they tell a meaningful mythological story. Performers are required to undergo intense training, including hours of eye exercises, when learning the art of Kathakali. Try the Cochin Cultural Center , Kerala Kathakali Center, or Greenix Village to see a performance.
