This temple is commonly known as Sharda Devi, and people living there (means localised) use to call this temple as Maihar Devi or Maa Sharda Mandir or Maihar Mata Mandir or Maihar Devi Mandir or Maihar ki Sharda Mata. There is a very famous story behind naming of this divine place as Maihar, Once upon a time Goddess Maa Durga ji was travelling with lord Shiv, Devi Mata's Necklaces had fallen down at this very place of temple and after that this place is known as Maihar. After this instance Goddess said to her husband that "this will become one of most religious place on earth and any one who comes to this place will be automatically blessed by me."
There was a Shephard who used to go to the Trikoot hill for grazing the cattles. One day he saw one golden coloured cow was along with his cattles but at the time of his return it had vanished, He was very much surprised to find this and decided that next day he would definitely catch that cow and ask its owner to pay him for grazing that cow.
The next day at the time of his return, that cow went the other way and he started following it. After a certain distance the cow entered a cave and door of the cave closed. Despite his repeated calls nobody opened the door and the Shephard kept sitting there. A few hours later a very old lady opened the door and enquired of the Shephard what was his problem. Thereupon he said he wanted some remuneration for grazing her cow.
The old lady gave him some grains and advised him not to come here again. The Shephard asked her how she lived there alone --- she said that was her home. The Shephard returned home and found that the grains had turned into costly jewels and gems. He thought these things were useless for him so he went to the king and gave him the same and told him all about. The king wondered and asked him to take him to that place the next day.
That day itself the King saw a dream wherein that old lady told him that she is Adi Shakti ( super power) Maa Sharada and asked him to build a shed over her idol at the top of the hill and arrange the required passage so as to facilitate her devotees to come to her and offer their prayers. The King accordingly made all arrangements.
Over the years many developments have taken place and now there is a beautiful temple and the deity is nicely adorned with beautiful ornaments. The temple opens at 5.00 in the morning and the large number of devotees line up for adoration of Maa Sharada from the very early morning. Earlier there was prevalent the system of sacrificing goat, but in 1910 the then ruler Brijnath Singh Ju Dev abolished it in the wake of a dream from Mother Goddess Sharada Devi and still today the animal sacrifice stands banned. Since the introduction of ropeway the visit to the temple has become easier and the number of devotees have increased manifold and temple remains crowded all the time everyday.
It is believed that two brothers-- Alaha and Udal ,who were ardent devotees of Maa Sharada, used to worship her for several hours in a day, It is said that Alaha had a vision of Maa Sharada and got her blessing of immortality. As such , it is believed that every morning, before the temple gate is opened, Alaha comes and offers flowers and garland in adoration of Maa Sharada. When the temple is opened in the morning at the appropriate time, fresh flowers and garland are found offered to the deity. Nobody as yet could solve the mystery. It is said that when Mother Sati, wife of Shiva, left for heavenly abode, Shiva carried her body in his shoulder and started dancing in madness, her necklace fell at the Trikoot Hill. People started calling it Mai ka Har (necklace of mother). The name of the place has been derived out of it as Maihar and it has become a Shakti Peeth.
Maihar Devi Temple is open for worship from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm.
