Belur Tourist Guide: Overview

Belur is a small town set on the bank of Yagachi river in Hassan district of Karnataka. City is well known for its fine art, historical gateway and for Chennakeshava temple which was a capital during Hoysala kingdom for a short duration.  Belur was also called as Velapuri during Hoysala period. The town is renowned for its Chennakeshava Temple which is one of the finest example of Hoysala workmanship. It is being proposed as a UNESCO world heritage site for its amazing 10th century temples and it attracts tourist for its amazing sculptures and intricate artistic. 

What is unique in Belur and why?

Belur is well known for its marvelous temples built during the rule of the Hoysala dynasty. Chennakeshava Temple was famous temple of lord Vishnu which is built by Shantaladevi, queen of king Vishnuvardhana. It is said that Shantaladevi herself danced in front of the main shrine during its installation and her dance inspired the poses of the figurines on the temple walls.  

There are about 48 pillars of various sizes, shapes and designs, bearing testimony to remarkable artistry and the main highlight of the temple are Darpana Sundari or "The lady with the mirror". There are many temple of Belur and Halebidu which is famous for its unique sculptures and statues of elephants, horses, lions, swans, depictions of mythological events, and scenes from the Indian epics.
