Built by the Nawab of Bhawalpur in 1937, the Taragarh Palace stands majestically at a height of 1,000 meters, amidst 15 acres of lush forests and tea gardens in the Kangra Valley in Taragarh, Himachal Pradesh. The palace was built as a summer resort by Nawab of Bahawalpur, he built large European-style summer residence for himself up in the cool Himalayan region of Kangra district. He laid out lush green gardens, built a glass pleasure pavilion and a mosque and christened his country palace Al-hilal. It was acquired by the Royal Family of Jammu & Kashmir in 1951.

Billing to Rajgundha day trek

KURU Fishing Area

Kuru village offers two fishing spots, both of which are accessible from one of the two river banks. The Kuru- Pool is the confluence of a small Khad with the Beas river, joining about 1 km above the village and forming a small bay, above and below which exceptional catches have been experienced. Access is through a 3 km- footpath from Dehra-Jwalamukhi road where a peepal tree and a small water tank is located at the rode side.

Tashi Jong Monestary ( 3 Kms)

In 1958, the 8th Khamtrul Rinpoche, Kalzang Dongyu Nyima,the head of Khampagar Monastery of the Drukpa Kagyü lineage in East Tibet, left for India with a group of 16 monks and lamas. In Eastern Tibet he had over 200 branch monasteries, nunneries and retreat centers. It was considered one of the foremost monasteries in East Tibet.

In India, they settled first in Kalimpong in West Bengal, where many lay people from the Khampagar area in Kham came seeking refuge, and affiliated themselves with the newly formed community. In 1969, they moved to Himachal Pradesh in North India. There they settled in the peaceful Kangra valley on 37 acres of land, which was named Tashi Jong, Tibetan for Auspicious Valley. The late Tokden Amtin mentioned that at the time of the initial consecration of the land of Tashi Jong, both H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and H.E. the 8th Khamtrul Rinpoche clearly felt this place to be the pure land of the Five Manjushris.

Khamtrul Rinpoche settled in Tashi Jong and  Today it is a bustling community and monastery. It encompasses a small stratum of the Tibetan refugees..This monastery depicts structures at different levels, there is a college for freshers and a Tibetan restaurant. The main shrine is placed on a top platform at the fag end of a garden.

SherabLing Monastery ( 5 Kms)

Sherab Ling Monastery is located at Baijnath in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh. It provides a complete range of facilities for monks to study and practice. The monastery has shrine halls, a monastic college, school, library, museum, exhibition hall and dispensary. There are full retreat facilities for monks, nuns and lay people.
 
The monastic college offers seven years long basic education. Debates are organized regularly for the students. The exhibition hall displays photographic exhibits, art and other presentations that show the life at the monastery and spirituality and works of the Tai Situpa, one of the main disciples of Buddha.
 
The craft center intends to teach traditional Tibetan arts, religious paintings, metal-work, wood carvings, sculpting and tailoring. Direct buses are available from Kangra. Baijnath Paprola Railway Station is the nearest railhead.

Bir, Dirru Sakya Monastery ( 10 kms)

The centre belongs to the Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism which was founded in 1073 by the great Tibetan Master Khon Konchok Gyalpo. The Sakya lineage has been a stable force that has greatly enhanced and preserved, in a pure form, the teachings of the Buddha. The head of their lineage is His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trizin, a great Spiritual Master. His Eminences Gyalsay Rinpoche and Dungyud Rinpoche are the joint Spiritual Heads of Sakya Tharpa Ling.
 

Norbulingka Institute , Mcleodganj ( 30 kms)

Palampur (10 Kms)

Palampur is a fascinating green hill station and a municipal council in the Kangra Valley in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, surrounded on all sides by tea gardens and pine forests before they merge with the Dhauladhar ranges. Everywhere we go we are handed well-produced information sheets by well-dressed, knowledgeable and patient young men, who do a thoroughly professional job of marketing the mysteries of Tibet.

There are two main Tibean temples, the Tsuglagkhang and the Kalachakra temple, plus a series of buildings forming the Namgyal Gompa where many monks live and study. It's a rather strange experience to walk into these temples.

St. John's Church ( 25 kms)

This Church stands on the Gandhi Chowk approximately 2 kms. from the main bus stand of Dalhousie. This Church was the first to be built after the town of Dalhousie was founded. Prior to 1863 a wooden structure stood at this place. The idea to build a stone structure took birth with the arrival of Rev. John H. Pratt who came to Dalhousie on 11-04-1863 and inspired the Christian community to build a permanent church building at this place. Building of this church is a copy of Roman Catholics church of England but this church belongs to Protestants. The church building stands in a good condition. Service is conducted on every Sunday.

Barot ( 60 kms)

Barot is a picnic spot and tourist location near by, The road to Barot branches off at Jogindernagar-Mandi high ways and from Jogindernagar the distance is 40 km.You can also use the trolley up from Jogindernagar which is a great thrill and reduces the distance by 12 km, it passes through terraced fields and thick cedar forests, the track rises to Jhatingri, an enchanting spot atop the hill.

Barot also forms the gateway to the Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary which lies across the Uhl. The sanctuary is home to the monal, black bear and ghoral. Within it are forest rest house s at Thaltuckhod and Silbandhwari. Through woods of cedar and pine a trek route cuts across the sanctuary to Kullu.

Andretta Village & Pottery Institue (15 kms)

Andretta village is near by, which is home to Sardar Sobha singh Art Gallery, in addition it has a famous Pottery, run by Mansimran "Mini" Singh, son of famous potter Gurcharan Singh. Andretta Pottery and Craft Society was started in 1983. it also provides 3 month courses for aspiring potters. Near by town is Panchrukhi (paanch(five)-rukhi(trees)), which also has a railway station as name suggest it had five big trees, is the main town and use to have lot of hustle and bustle.

Uttarala Village

Uttrala is a small hamlet located nearly 11 km north of Baijnath. Uttrala is an ideal place to enjoy a peaceful break from the city life. If you are a Trekking enthusiast, this serene destination is worth the visit. The trek to Ravi valley over Jalsu Pass starts from Uttrala. Jalsu Pass (3600 m) is one of the lowest passes of the majestic Dhauladhar, and is easy to cross. Alternatively, one can also trek from Uttrala to Gdoh village.

 
Masroor Rock Temple (35 kms)

The rock-cut temple is a unique example of monolithic structure in the sub-Himalayan region. The beautiful and complex structure of this temple stands magnificently on a hill crest and was erected around in 8th century. The entire complex comprises more than 15 Shikhar temples and a large rectangular water tank known as 'gan' in the local dialect. Unfortunately, most of the Shikhars of this historical temple have lost their base owing to a massive earthquake in 1905.

Baijnath Temple ( 5 Kms)

World famous Ancient Shiva temple, Continuously under worship since 1204 A.D. The Svayambhu form of Sivalinga is enshrined in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple that has five projections on each side and is surmounted with a tall curvilinear Shikhara. The entrance to sanctum is through a vestibule that has a large square Mandapa in front with two massive balconies one each in north and south. There is a small porch in front of the mandapa hall that rests on four pillars in the front preceded by an idol of Nandi, the bull, in a small pillared shrine. The whole temple is enclosed by a high wall with entrances in the south and north. The outer walls of the temple have several niches with images of gods and goddesses. Numerous images are also fixed or carved in the walls.

Baghsunath temple Mcleodganj ( 30kms)

Bhagsunath Temple, an ancient temple 3 km east of Mcleodganj and 11 km from Dharamsala. This temple has a pool of glaciar fed water,considered sacred by devout Hindus. The annual fair in September is famous. Other major attractions include a majestic waterfall. The region offers breathtaking views of surrounding hilly ranges and woody forests. The ambiance of the place is dynamic and the atmosphere is cool and pleasant.

Chamunda Mata Temple ( 15 kms)

The demons ‘Chand” and “Mund” were killed by hence known as “Chamunda”. Meri Maiya Chamundadevi Mandir is seven hundred years old; build by a Maiya bhakt from the village, who was asked by Meri Maiya Herself in his dream to fetch the idol across Ban Ganga and place it in the temple over "Holy Meri Maiya Pindi" and worship Her. The Mandir is a holy shrine of 'Shiva and Shakti' and is known as 'Chamunda Nandikeshwar Dham'. Meri Maiya Mandir is a seat of spirituality since ancient times and is situated on the bank of Ban-Ganga.

Himani Chamunda Devi Temple via helicopter

Himani Chamunda temple is located at 15000 feet altitude on the Dharamsala-Palampur road. From the new temple to the old one, it’s a 13 Km stiff uphill trek. Now the old Chamunda devi temple is now linked by helicopter services, the Sidh Peeth Adhi Himani Chamunda temple will become a very attractive tourist and hindu pilgrimage center of the area,cost of the trip costs around Rs 3500/- only..

The heli taxi service, from Chamunda Temple to Himani Chamunda Temple, takes approx 15-minute journey one side by helicopter, govt plans to develop The Himani Chamunda temple on the pattern of Vasishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir.

Brajeshwari Temple Shaktipeeth or Kangra Mata temple ( 35 kms)

The Brajeshwari Devi temple, A shaktipeeth is located in the old Kangra Township, is said to have been built over the charred breasts of Sati. This shrine, once renown for its great wealth, was plundered relentlessly over the ages. The first of the plunderers was Mahmud of Ghazni, who looted it in 1009. A mosque was built on the ruins and a garrison was left behind. 35 years later, the local king regained its possession. The shrine was repaired and a replica of the idol was enshrined. The temple was filled with gold, silver and diamonds only to be ransacked again in 1360 by Firoz Tughlaq. Later Emperor Akbar visited the shrine with his Dewan, Todar Mal and restored it to its former grandeur. The temple was razed to the ground by an earthquake in 1905, but a new one came up the very same year.

Jwalamukhi Temple - Shaktipeeth ( 50Kms)

Jwalamukhi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Jwalamukhi. There are natural flames in the temple which are worshipped as a manifestation of the nine Goddesses - Mahakali, Unpurna, Chandi, Hinglaj, Bindhya Basni, Maha Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ambika and Anji Devi. These flames burn continuously without any fuel or assistance and may be seen erupting from a rock-side.

Chintpurni Temple - Shaktipeeth ( 70 kms)

When Lord Vishnu cut up the body of Sati into 51 pieces so that Lord Shiva would calm down and stop his Tandava, the pieces were scattered over various places in the Indian subcontinent. It is said that the feet of Sati fell at this place and is thus considered one of the most important of the 51 Shakti Peeths. The temple dedicated to Mata Chintpurni Devi is located in District Una of Himachal Pradesh. Mata Chintpurni Devi is also known as Mata Shri Chhinnamastika Devi. Devotees have been visiting this Shaktipeeth for centuries to pray at the lotus feet of Mata Shri Chhinnamastika Devi. They bring with them their worldly concerns and seek blessings from the Devi. It is believed that if you ask something from the Devi with a true heart, your wish will be granted.

Kangra Art Museum (25 kms)

Situated in Kotwali Bazaar of Dharamsala, Kangra Art Gallery was inaugurated in 1990. It houses an impressive collection of arts, crafts, artifacts, costumes and other treasures, which can be traced to as far back as 5th century. There is also an art gallery that houses exemplary specimens of famous Kangra Kalam works or the Pahari miniature paintings, the exquisite art that is being actively promoted from the museum. This school of painting is famous for the use of seductive figures and fine colors. It is said to be a pictorial representation of the cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh. The colors used in this style of painting are extracted from dried-up flowers and herbs and this art form has a strong thematic base. The most famous miniature paintings of the Kangra School revolve around historical, religious and traditional background of the royalty and the courts of the former rulers of Kangra that belonged to Katoch dynasty.

Losel Doll Museum ( 20 kms)

Losel Doll Museum inside the Norbulingka Institute exhibits beautifully decorated dolls. Costumes and activities of the people in each of the regions of Tibet are represented through these dolls. Along with the crafts produced at institute, models of dolls are also put on sale.
 
The Losel Doll Museum can be found in the Norbulinka Palace ("Beautiful Garden Palace", originally the name of the summer palace of the Dalai Lamas in Tibet) in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India. It is a place that might have been designed by a Tibetan relative of Jan Svankmajer ( [link] ), filled with stately, strange, vivid dolls recreating the lost traditional clothes and customs of the Tibetans.

The Kangra Fort (30 kms)

The Kangra Fort situated on the out-skirts of the Kangra Town. From kangra town, a long and narrow passage leads up to the top of the Fort through the Ahani and Amiri Darwaza, both attributed to Nawab Alif Khan, the first governor of Kangra under the Great Moghuls Some 500 feet from the outer gate the passage turns round at a very sharp angle and passes through the Jahangiri Darwaza who built it after his conquest of the Fort in A.D. 1620. Then there is Darsani Darwaza, flanked by defaced statues of he river-goddess, Ganga and Yamuna, and must date back to a time previous to the Muslim occupation of the Fort.Along the south side of which stood the shrines of Lakshmi Narayana, Sitala, and Ambika Devi.They were square chambers profusely decorated with carvings. It is questionable whether they have been rightly designated as temples, as there was no indication that they ever contained any object of worship. 
 
Next to the Kangra fort in the old town of Kangra there is situated a beautiful Jain temple which was built thirty years ago. Build in traditional jain architecture it incorporates skillful stone carving of which the exquisite rosette at the centre of the ceiling is especially worth mentioning.
