Panj Takht (The Five Sikh Takhts)

Panj Takht are 5 important Gurudwaras of Sikhism which have a significant respect. In Sikhism, Guru is refrered as Sachcha Patshah (true king) and to his gaddi (spiritual seat) as Takht and the congregation he led as darbar (court). These Panj Takht take Religious, Social and Political decisions as required by Sikh community.

In 1609, Sri Guru Hargobind Singh established the first and the most important one of the Panj Takht 'Akal Takht' near Sri Harmandar Sahib (Golden Temple) at Amritsar.

Sri Akal Takht Sahib :

Akal Takht Sahib literally means Eternal Throne. It is also part of the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar. It's foundation was laid by Guru Hargobind Sahib . The Akal Takht is situated opposite to Harmandir Sahib and are connected by a passage. The building of the Akal Takht opposite the Golden Temple has a special meaning. While the Golden Temple stands for spiritual guidance the Akal Takht symbolizes the dispensing of justice and temporal activity. During the day the Guru Granth Sahib is kept in the Golden Temple, while at night it is kept in the Akal Takht Sahib. In earlier days all Sikh warriors sought blessings here before going to battle fields. During the 18th century while Sikhs were fighting a guerrilla war in the forests they used to gather at the Akal Takht on special occasions such as Baisakhi and Diwali. Here the community used to have general meetings and approve resolutions. The Akal Takht is the oldest of the Five Takhts.

Takht Sri Damdama Sahib :

Takht Sri Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo) is situated in the village of Talwandi Sabo near Bhatinda. At this place Guru Gobind Singh stayed here for approximately a year and compiled the final edition of Guru Granth Sahib also known as the Damdama Sahib Bir in 1705.

Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib :

Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib is situated at Anandpur Sahib. It is the birthplace of the Khalsa. The order of the Khalsa was founded here by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. Some of the weapons of Guru Gobind Singh are displayed here.

Sikhism Pilgrimage

The world is a home to various religions, which are strictly followed by its devotees. There are various types of religions like Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism and many more. Talking about Sikhism, it is the 5th largest religion in the whole world. Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak Dev and is based on the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev and the nine other gurus. The term Sikhism sprang up from the word Sikh, which further came from the Sanskrit term Sisya i.e. a disciple. People following the religion of Sikhism are known as Sikh. There are around 23 million Sikhs all over the world. Sikh visits the Gurudwaras, which are a place of worship for the Sikh people.

There are various gurudwaras all over the world, each of them having their own importance. Sikh Punjabi and other pilgrims from far off places visit such Gurudwaras so as attain the peace of mind as well as soul. All these journeys overtaken by the Sikhs in order to visit the holy sites is termed as Sikhism pilgrimage. Various pilgrimages are organized by Sikh people from time to time. All these Sikhism sacred places are undertaken in a certain part of the year. The Sikh pilgrimages may be performed through various means like vehicles, horses or even walking.

Sikh Prayer

The Ardas is usually always done standing up with folded hands. The beginning of the Ardas is strictly set by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. When it comes to conclusion of this prayer, the devotee uses word like "Waheguru please bless me in the task that I am about to undertake" when starting a new task or "Akal Purakh, having completed the hymn-singing, we ask for your continued blessings so that we can continue with your memory and remember you at all times", etc.

Panj pyare

Panj Pyare (literally the five beloved ones), is the name collectively given to the five Sikh men, Bhai Sahib Singh, Bhai Dharam Singh, Bhai Himmat Singh, Bhai Mohkam Singh and Bhai Daya Singh by Guru Gobind Singh at the historic divan at Anandpur Sahib on 13 April 1699. They formed the nucleus of the Khalsa, as the first batch to receive khanda di Pahul, i.e. rites of the two-edged sword.
In Sikh theology, as in the Indian classical tradition generally, panj or paanch i.e. the numeral five, has a special significance. Guru Nanak in Japji refers to five khands, i.e. stages or steps in spiritual development, and calls a spiritually awakened person a panch. The ancient Indian socio-political institution panchayat meant a council of five elders. Something like an inner council of five existed even in the time of the earlier Gurus: five Sikhs accompanied Guru Arjan on his last journey to Lahore; the five were each given 100 armed Sikhs to command by his successor, Guru Hargobind; Guru Tegh Bahadur, set out on his journey to Delhi to court execution attended by five Sikhs.

Until the Baisakhi of AD 1699, Sikh initiation ceremony, charan pahul, comprised the administering of charanamrit or charanodak to the novitiate. As Bhai Gurdas, Varan, I.23, records, this was the practice Guru Nanak introduced for the Sikhs. At the ceremony the novitiate quaffed water poured over the foot of the Guru and vowed to follow the religious and moral injunctions as well as the code of communal conduct laid down. Later, masands or local leaders, specially authorized by the Gurus, also administered charan pahul. According to Kesar Singh Chhibbar, Bansavalinama, a modification was introduced in the time of Guru Hargobind when water, poured over the toe of the right foot of each of the five chosen Sikhs assembled in a dharamsal, was received in a bowl and administered to the seekers after ardas or supplicatory prayer.

Gurudwara Shri Harimandir Sahib, Amritsar

GURUDWARA SHRI HARMANDIR SAHIB is situated in the middle of Amritsar city. It is also known as the Golden Temple or Darbar Sahib (Divine Court). The Golden Temple is a living symbol of the spiritual and historical traditions of the Sikhs. It is a source of inspiration for all Sikhs and their chief place of pilgrimage. The temple with it's glistening gold covered exterior stands in the middle of the tank of nectar. Gurudwara Shri Harmandir Sahib has entrances and doors on all four sides. SHRI GURU ARJAN DEV JI exclaimed; "My faith is for the people of all castes and all creeds from whichever direction they come and to whichever direction they bow." SHRI GURU AMARDAS JI asked SHRI GURU RAMDAS JI to build a central place of congregation for the Sikhs.Baba Budha used to monitor the digging work sitting under the Beri situated in the Parikrma. SHRI GURU RAMDAS JI started excavation work in 1577 during his lifetime. SHRI GURU ARJAN DEV JI completed excavation of the Tank known as Amritsar (The Pool of Nectar) in 1588. SHRI GURU ARJAN DEV JI then started construction of the Temple building himself which was finally completed in 1601. SHRI GURU ARJAN DEV JI got the Foundation stone of Gurudwara Shri Harimandir Sahib laid down by Sain Mian Mir a muslim prophet. The first edition of the Holy Book of the Sikh's SHRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB was installed there in 1604 Baba Buddha was appointed the first granthi (caretaker of the book). The last Sikh Guru to live in Amritsar was SHRI GURU HARGOBIND JI. The Golden Temple has always been a rallying point for Sikhs throughout it's history. In 1761 the Afghan Ahmed Shah Abdali blew up the Temple and filled in the Sacred Tank with refuse. The great Sikh martyr Baba Deep Singh laid down his life in revenge. The construction of the Golden Temple as it appears today was begun in 1764 when Jassa Singh Ahluwalia laid the foundation stone. Many of the doors, walls and domes were covered with copper sheets overlaid with gold during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
