Sardar Sobha Singh Art Gallary - Andretta Village - kangra

We travel to world famous Andretta Village to see the Art Gallary of  Sardar Sobha Singh and his world famous paintings,  S. Sobha Singh, During his 38-year stay at Andretta, painted hundreds paintings, of His main focus was Sikh gurus, their life and work. His series on the Sikh gurus have dominated to an extent that his paintings dominate the public's perception associated with Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh.

His paintings of Sohni Mahiwal and Heer Ranjha were also very popular. He also painted impressive portraits of national heroes and leaders like Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Mahatma Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri etc


The portrait he made in honour of the 500th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak in 1969 is the one most people believe to be the visage of Guru Nanak. Sobha Singh painted pictures of other gurus as well, Guru Amar Das, Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Har Krishan.

Day-1 - Reaching Palampur


Pick from Chandigarh and drive to Palampur through Kangra & Chamunda Devi Temples. See the ancient art work in these historical temples and Reach Palampur by the evening.

Day-2 Visit Andretta Village of Sardar Sobha Singh & Baijnath Hertiage temple Visit

After Breakfast at Neuggal cafe , Proceed to Andretta Village, which is half an hour drive from Palampur through Panchrukhi village. Have a little stop at Panchrukhi railway station and enjoy the himalayan train station. about 10 minutes later you will find your selves at Sardar Sobha Singh Art Gallary. There is an entry free to enter the gallary, once inside you can see the Art Gallary, You are not supposed to touch the paintings and no pictures please.

After Andretta, we proceed to Baijnath temple located at about 45 minutes drive from Andretta, Spend one hour admiring the beauty of Heritage temple and have Darshans ( Blessings) Lord Shiva.

Move back to Palampur Hotel, On the return visit the Palampur Team factory.

Day -3 Visit Kangra Art Museum , Naam Art Gallary and Mcleodganj Site Seeings

After Breakfast, proceed to see the "Kangra Art Museum" at Kotwali Bazaar Dharamshala, Kangra Art Museum is the treasure trove of the Kangra valleys arts, crafts and rich past. Spend One Hour at Kangra Art Museum and enjoy and admire exemplary specimens of famous Kangra Kalam works or the Pahari miniature paintings, the exquisite art that is being actively promoted from the museum, also see the impressive collection of Kangra Miniature Art works, arts, crafts, artifacts, costumes and other treasures, which can be traced to as far back as 5th century. The variety of items on display includes woodcarvings and tribal jewellery, sculptures and pottery, anthropological items, collections of coins and manuscripts, royal tents, Shamianas and pandals, etc.

Open from Tuesday to Sunday, Kangra Art Museum has a library and a separate section to display the works of contemporary artists, sculptors and photographers. There is also an art gallery that houses  This school of painting is famous for the use of seductive figures and fine colors

The colors used in miniature art paintings are extracted from dried-up flowers and herbs and this art form has a strong thematic base. About Kangra Fort

The fort is right next to Kangra town. 32.1°N 76.27°E The fort stands on a steep rock in Purana Kangra (translates to Old Kangra) dominating the surrounding valley, built strategically at the "sangam" confluence (places where two rivers meet) of Banganga and Majhi rivers. It is said that Kangra belongs to one who owns the fort.

Also near to old Kangra is the famous Jayanti Mata temple on a hill top. The Temple was built by the General of the Gorkha Army, Bada Kaji Amar Singh Thapa. Also close to entrance is a small museum which exhibits the history of Kangra fort.

Maharaja Sansar Chand Katoch Museum Visit

Adjoining the Fort is the Maharaja Sansar Chand Katoch Museum run by the Royal Family of Kangra. The Museum also provides audio guides for the fort and the museum and has a cafeteria.

Kangra was once one of the wealthiest places in India, it was repeatedly plundered by invaders like Mahmud Ghazanhi, Taimur, British,  who took away wealth after plundering kangra. 

The Kangra fort is located on a rock in old Kangra, overlooking the entire valley. It was built at the confluence of the Banganga and Manjhi streams. These serve as a natural moat for the fort. You wll be able to see very little of the forts former grandeur as it is in ruins, but it is still interesting because of the way in which it was built and the history that surrounds it. 

Art Attractions in Kangra Fort


The huge wooden gates or Darwazas are artistic and archaeological point of interest in the construction of the fort. The Ranjit Singh Darwaza, Jehangiri Darwaza, Andheri Darwaza & jahangiri Mosque are all worth seeing from art and architecture point of view. There is still a mehrab an arch from old times. Finally the Darshini Darwaza, one of the oldest structures that is still standing. This leads to a charming stone paved courtyard around the boundaries which are built the royal chambers. 


Masrur Rock temples Visit in the Afternoon ( Dehra Gopipur)

Masrur Rock temples are little known wonder of Himalayas. These is amazing temple complex cut in a single rock about 1000 years ago.Known for its monolithic rock-cut temples, Masroor is 38 km from Kangra Town. There are 15 rock-cut temples in Indo-Aryan style and are richly carved. It is a unique monolithic structure in the sub-Himalayan region and is a protected monument.

The main shrine contains three stone images of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita. The temple complex is located on a hill and also has a large rectangular water pond. The view of snow clad Dhauladhar is amazing from the temple premises.

The nearest visitable places includes Pong lake near Nagrota Surian, 10 km from Masroor and hot water springs at Tattwani village, on the bank of Gaj rivulet near Salol village on Lunj- Gaggal road, 15 km from Masroor. It is accessible from Gaggal (30 km) on Nagrota Surian link road and 22 km from Ranital road.
