Festivals and Events in Goa

One of the most remarkable features of life in Goa is its religious harmony. All communities, irrespective of their personal beliefs, celebrate all festivals with gusto. Most festivals in Goa are related to religious activities, and every village ‘jatra’, or feast, is celebrated with great pomp and gaiety. The most famous is the Winter Carnival prior to Lent (February), when there is great fun & frolic, music & dancing, lasting for three days. All night dancing on the streets with specially designed costumes and masks ends in a frenzied finale, with Momo, the King of Darkness, leading a colourful procession through the town. Not to be missed. The major festivals are Diwali (the ‘Festival of Lights’, October/November), Christmas and Ganesh Chaturthi (August/September). Shigmotsav, (February/March, coinciding with Holi in north India), is a festival to welcome spring and is celebrated with colour and great merriment. Some of the other popular Goa festivals, each celebrated in its own distinctive way, are Mahashivratri, the Feast of St. Francis Xavier at Old Goa, the Fatorpa Jatra, All Saints Feast at Goa Velha and the Shirigao Jatra.

Things to do in Goa

There are varieties of things to do in Goa for both adventurous as well as laidback travellers. Shopaholics will also not be disappointed in Goa. The long stretches of golden sand and the pandemonium of the waves will captivate you. Apart from beaches, the old state of Goa has several forts, churches, monastery and cathedrals to visit. Adventure enthusiasts may like to participate in numerous water sports at the popular Calangute, Baga, Anjuna and Vagator beaches. Scuba diving, jet skiing, para-sailing, motorboat and water-scooter ride or a cruise – take your pick and explore the waters of Goa.

Best Time to Visit Goa

The best time to visit Goa is between late October and early April. The peak tourist season is from mid-December to mid-January, when the weather is near perfect, with daytime temperatures rarely going beyond 32° C. People from all over the world descend upon Goa at this time of the year, so be sure to have made your hotel bookings well in advance as accommodation prices hit the ceiling due to high demand. The Goa Carnival festival is held in late February or early March and this again is a great time to be in Goa. The festivities are filled with music and dancing, pageants and parades.

Culture of Goa

The culture of Goa is an amalgamation of Indian and Portuguese culture. The long Portuguese rule has influenced the culture in more ways than one and many of the Portuguese traditions are reflected in the Goan culture even today. Dance and music is deeply embedded in the Goan culture. The most popular dance forms in Goa are Fugdi and Dhalo, which are traditional dances, performed only by women. Some dances are specific to an occasion or festival they are performed in. The Dhangar is performed during the Hindu festival of Navaratras and during the Shigmo festival women perform a lamp dance. Goa comes alive in the festive season and it is then that you see the splendid blend of cultures that coexist beautifully over here.

Beaches

Miramar Beach, closest to the capital Panaji (3 km), is conveniently located in the heart of the state capital which is also why it is rather crowded and often dirty, though you can watch some spectacular sunsets, as the sun sets at the confluence of the River Mandovi as it flows into the Arabian Sea.

A small, idyllic beach with the Dona Paula Beach Resort, and neighbouring Piranha cottages, Caranzalem is situated at a distance of nine kilometres southwest of Panaji. Though not very pretty, Caranzalem (between Miramar and Dona Paula) is quiet and safe for swimming, it has water scooters and other water sports facilities as there is no undercurrent, which makes it an ideal sightseeing place in Goa. The Vaniguinim beach overlooks the Mormugao Bay but is accessible only from the Cidade de Goa Hotel.

North Goa

The entire coast from Fort Aguada all the way to Goa’s border with Maharashtra is a virtually unbroken 30 km stretch of beach, some rocky, hazardous and hidden in secluded coves and others that are long stretches of golden sand. Calangute is the busiest resort in Goa and now the centre of the ‘package’ tourist trade and has a long beach of coarse golden sand but there is a dangerous undertow that restricts swimming time. There is plenty of accommodation available here and lots of fellow tourists for company.

Goa Seafood Restaurants

This is the time of year that most Indian families take their summer holiday to Goa; prices are cheaper and most of the party crowd has left. There are less backpackers and more Indian couples on their honeymoons in monsoon Goa.  It’s all a bit more family friendly and laid-back, but the negative is there aren’t many places to eat and party. Here are the best sea foods restaurant of Goa.

  • Ritz Classic, Panaji Goa

  • Fisherman's Wharf, Salcette Goa

  • Souza Lobo, Calangute Goa

  • Adelaide, Candolim Goa

  • Star Light, Baga Beach Goa
