Dharamshala airport

Dharamshala Airport (actual name: Kangra Airport or Gaggal) is about 250 km from Chandigarh.

Dharamshala or Gaggal Airport (IATA: DHM, ICAO: VIGG) is also known as Kangra Airport or Dharamshala - Kangra Airport. Dharamshala is alternatively spelled as Dharamsala.

Dharamsala is about 15 km from the airport and takes about 32 minutes drive whereas Mcleod Ganj is another 5.5 km away and takes an extra drive of about 23 minutes.

Winter (October-March): The temperature in winters remains between 4 and 7 degrees Celsius. Snowfall begins from the end of December and continues until February.

Summer (April-June): The temperature in summers ranges between 20 and 35 degrees Celcius. The temperature begins to rise and snow begins to fade away in the month of April.

Monsoon (July-September): The temperature ranges from 18 to 22 degrees Celsius during monsoon. This season continues month of July to September and due to rain showers, it is not considered the best time to visit Dharamshala.

Palampur

Palampur is a fascinating spot in the Kangra Valley also known as "Tea Capital of North India", surrounded on all sides by tea gardens and pine forests. The place enjoys a healthy climate and the pine scented air is said to have curative properties. The scenery presents a sublime and beautiful contrast- the plain presents a picture of rural loveliness and repose, while the hills are majestic. Behind this town stands high ranges of Dhauladhar Mountains, whose tops remain covered for most part of the year. The best thing about Palampur is that it always feels like home town whenever you visit here. The whole atmosphere is so pleasant that tourists enjoy it without knowing it. Palampur offers fine Tea Gardens where you can lay down and relax for hours.

Tourism in Palampur is a different experience as Palampur is different from all the Tourist Places of Himachal. There are also some pleasant walks around the town. A short walk from here takes one to the awe inspiring Bundla chasm which falls over a 100mts. to the Bundla stream.

The stream is a thin streak running over stony ground far below the cliff. During the monsoon seasons, it swells and rages - madly over the entire width of the chasm taking stones and boulders along with it and makes loud roaring noise like thunder.

Chamunda devi temple: This temple is dedicated to Goddess Chamunda, offers enchanting views of the Dhauladhar mountains. The Baner Khud which flows alongside the temple, and the Pathian and Lahla forests. Situated in Jadrangal village in Kangra area, the temple is located on the right bank of Baner Khad which is a tributary of Beas River.

Tashi jong monastery: Tashi Jong in Tibetan means 'Auspicious Valley'. It is a Buddhist spiritual monument, placed in the monastery along with a wide variety of Tibetan artifacts, paintings and other magnificent articles. The roof of the monastery is curved, mounted with red-golden colored ornamentation which looks like prayer flags. The walls are adorned with paintings, representing the different facets of Tibetan art and culture.

Brijeshwari Temple: Brijeshwari Temple is also known as Vajreshwari Temple, The temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati or Brajeshwari, who is worshipped here in the form of a Pindi. This spectacular temple was invaded by many times by several extremists and thus, in the intervening years the temple was rebuilt and renovated several times and during the festival of Lohri the temple is decorated with a layer of butter.

Andretta: located at 13 km. from town Palampur. It is the home of the famous artist, late Sardar Shobha Singh and late play writer Norah Richards. This presents an excellent view of the Dhauladhar Range.

Bir: Bir is a village located in the west of Joginder Nagar Valley in the state of Himachal Pradesh in northern India. Bir is a noted centre for ecotourism, spiritual studies and meditation

Billing: Billing is located 70 km. from Dharamshala and is a Paragliding destination in the heart of Himalaya’s near famous tourist destination Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh. There are amazing paintings in their private houses which are worth seeing. The place offers breathtaking views of the Dhauladhar Range, a real treat for the photographers. This famous center for pottery and crafts at Andretta and the craft society was started in 1983. It is a production studio which makes attractive earthen slipware, besides also providing a three month courses for aspiring potters.

Baijnath Shiva temple: Baijnath is famous for its 13th-century temple. The temple attracts a large number of tourists and pilgrims from all over India and abroad throughout the year. Special prayers are offered in the morning and evening every day besides on special occasions and during festive seasons.

Chamunda devi temple: This temple is situated in Jadrangal village in Kangra area, the temple is located on the right bank of Baner Khad which is a tributary of Beas River. This is a famous Hindu religious temple, dedicated to Goddess Chamunda, offers enchanting views of the Dhauladhar Mountains. Kangra Art Museum: Museum is a treasure house of rich heritage of the valleys art and culture, located near Kotwali Bazaar at DharAmshala. Museum is still in infancy but now the collection is increased to 1500 art object comprising miniature paintings, textiles, sculptures, jewellery, coins and objects of cultural anthropology.

Kangra fort: It is also known as the “Nagar Kot”, which is situated just 42 Kms from Palampur on the convergence of the Rivers Banganga and Manjhi and. The two entrance gates of the Fort have a beautiful courtyard in between them. It is presently preserved by Archaeological department.

The Tibetans settled in Dharamshala in 1960, as His Holiness the Dalai Lama had to flee Tibet in 1959 and the Prime Minister of India allowed Him and some of His followers to settle in McLeod Ganj, a colonial British summer picnic spot is the most sacred monument in McLeod Ganj. The temple houses larger than life statues of the Buddha, Padmasambhava and Avaloktwshwara. The temple also houses one of the largest collections of sacred Tibetan texts. It is 10 minutes walk from the guess house. You can meditate or you can take a serene morning or evening walk around the temple.

Triund Hill: Triund Hill is located at a height of about 2,842 meters above sea level and with a distance of about 9 kilometers from McLeodganj (located at height of 2,082 meters above sea level) and 17 kilometers from Dharamshala.

Tibetan Museum: Located near the Main Temple of His Holiness the Dalai Lama (Tsuglag Khang). Tibet Museum exhibit Tibetan history and ongoing movement through huge collection of photographs and documentaries.

Naddi View Point: Naddi is a small village in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. The Village is very scenic and is just 3 or 4 kilometers away from Mcleod Ganj, the headquarters of the Tibetan government in Exile. There are several points like Sunset point, Eco point and View Point. The sunset point really does offer beautiful sunset views. From the View point one can see the whole of the Dhauladhar mountain ranges.

Nechung Monastery: Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling Monastery has an important place in Tibetan history as the seat of the State Oracle of Tibet. Nechung monastery in Tibet lies just below Drepung monastery, four miles west of Lhasa, the country's capital. Nechung originally came to Tibet with a descendant of the Indian sage Dharmapala.

How to go to Dharamsala

By Train: An overnight train journey is a good option to reach Dharamshala. The nearest major railway station is at Pathankot, 85 kilometres away. There are numerous trains that go to Jammu and Kashmir that stop by in Pathankot. You can take a taxi or bus from Pathankot to reach Dharamshala. There is also a smaller railway station, Kangra Mandir, just 22 kilometres from Dharamshala

By Bus: Dharamshala is well-connected to Delhi and other parts of North India via a network of state operated buses as well as private tour operators. The journey is almost 520 kilometers from Delhi. Most buses stop at the main bus terminal in Lower Dharamshala, but there are also some public Haryana Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses that go all the way to the main square of McLeod Ganj. An overnight journey from Delhi takes about 13 hours. You can book HRTC tickets online.

By Air: The nearest airport is at Gaggal, about 13 kilometers away from Dharamshala. Gaggal airport connects Dharamshala to Delhi via Air India and Spice Jet flights. Tourists from other parts of India would find it easier to take a flight till Chandigarh and book a taxi for their onward journey to Dharamshala, which is about 275 kilometers away.
