Ratnagiri is a port city on the Arabian Sea coast in Ratnagiri District. It is surrounded by beautiful hills of Sahyadri ranges. It was once the administrative capital of Bijapur rulers. Ratnagiri was surrendered to the British in 1818. It is also believed that the Pandavas having performed their pilgrimage on the 13th year had settled in the adjoining territory of the Ratnagiri district and when the Pandavas and the Kauravas had the famous war at Kuruskshetra, the king of this region Veeravat Ray had accompanied then there. Places to visit Ratnagiri

Swayambhu Ganpati Temple: The Swayambhu Ganpati Temple is one of the most renowned and striking attractions of Ganapatipule. It has been dedicated to Lord Ganpati and the idol of the God inside the temple is built of pule, white sand, and it is also said that this idol has originated by itself and nobody has made it ever. The temple is situated at a distance of 20 kms from the main town of Ratnagiri. The ambiance of the holy place gets enchanted with the early morning nagara sound. You can hear the rhythmic beats coming from the temple early in the morning and evenings when the idol is being dressed. The temple attracts a lot of visitors especially during the Hindu festival of Diwali. 

Ganapatipule Beach: Ganapatipule Beach is situated at a distance of 28 km from Ratnagiri and is one of the most visited places of this city. This beach has been named after the Hindu deity Ganesha and houses an ancient temple under the same name. This place also attracts a large number of Hindu devotees. Other attractions of this beach include delicious food stalls, beautiful views of sunset and unique white sand which is rarely found on Indian beaches.

Marleshwar Temple: Marleshwar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple and is located on the outskirts of Ratnagiri. It is situated on an isolated hill and is thoroughly surrounded by a dense network of evergreen forest. It is believed that the ‘Shivling’ of this temple remains surrounded by Cobra snakes throughout the year. Marleshwar temple provides a beautiful view of the nearby mountains and is surrounded by numerous waterfalls. However, one should visit this place preferably in the monsoon season as most of the waterfalls get dried up during other seasons.

Jaigad Lighthouse: The Jaigad Lighthouse is situated in one of the bastion on the western edge of the Jaigad Fort. The lighthouse is surrounded by the ancient fort of Ratnadurg on one side and by Arabian Sea on the other. The lighthouse is 16 m tall tower and is equipped with facilities like radio sensor, sodium lamp and storm sensors to guide the nearby ships sailing in the sea. Ratnagiri lighthouse is a pleasingly peaceful place and provides you a 360 degree view of the Arabian Sea. 

Guhagar Beach: Guhagar beach is situated at a distance of about 8 km from Ratnagiri and is one of the most peaceful beaches in the state of Maharashtra. The beach is geographically blessed with Sahyadri mountain range on its east and the Arabian Sea on its west. This beach remains surrounded by local fishermen, boat owners and adventure sport operators and is one of the most captivating places in Ratnagiri. 

Unhavare Hot Water Spring: Unhavare is famous for its natural springs’ hot water. Mahamai Gram Devata Mandir and a small Masjid are other attractions of this Unhavare. 

Ratnadurg Fort: Ratnadurg Fort is major attraction in Ratnagiri. The beauty of the fort is quite superb. In the year 1670, the Maratha leader Shivaji conquered the fort from the Bijapur ruler Adil Shah. The fort is in the shape of a horseshoe, with a length of 1,300 meters. The Arabian Sea surrounds it from three sides. One of the fort's bastions has a lighthouse. A temple of the Goddess Bhagwati is located inside the fort.

Alphonso mango is a seasonal fruit, considered to be among the most superior varieties of the fruit in terms of sweetness, richness and flavour. The variety is named after Afonso de Albuquerque Portuguese general and military expert who helped establish Portuguese colonies in India. The Portuguese introduced grafting on mango trees to produce extraordinary varieties like Alphonso. The fruit was then introduced to the Konkan region in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat and some parts of southern state of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.
