Yusuf Adil Shah became governor of Bijapur in 1481, declared his independence in 1489, Bijapur was the capital of Adil Shahi kingdom from 1489 to 1686. The town was ruled by the Chalukyas from the 11th-12th century and was known as Vijaypur. Under the Bahamani Sultnate of Gulbarga, it was rechristened Bijapur.
