The trekking is possible from kolukkumalai to meesapulimalai. Which is moderate to tough.

3. Also choose Jeep with central sofa seats in the middle, as it will be more comfortable as compared to sitting in the back.

Floriculture Centre

It is located enroute Matuppetty Dam, just after the city, It is run by the Kerala Forest Dept. It is famous for the large variety of flowers and herbal plants. It is not a must visit if you are not into floweres.

Photo Point Munnar 

Photo point is next to Floriculture centre and actually located at a pictursque bend. There are many vendors here selling boiled or roasted American Corn, Childern Toys, tender coconut Juice etc. 

Uniqueness of Photo Point

Photo point is unique and worth stopping due to following reasons

1. Place offers breath-taking view of the Valleys and tea Plantation
2. The tea plantation in the background of Photo point is unique with Rubber Trees aligned in rechtangles offering a perfect photo opportunity.
3. There is often a herd of 5 wild elephants grazing near the water area visible for the photo point. In year 2015 a calf was also seen with the herd.

Mattupetti Dam

Though the Dam is small but very beautiful with calm waters and mountains on all sides. It is a great place to spend the whole day with Kids.

The following activites are available at the Mattupetti Dam area

1. Boating in Dam :- You could take the speed boat ride which is fantastic. It costs Rs 300 if you have to hire a boat for you alone. The ride is for 15 min. The maximum capacity is 5 persons and you could save some money if you are a group of 4-5. 
2. Horse riding :- Horse riding is available at the dam
3. Shooting :- There are many vendors who ofder baloon shooting at the bank of the dam.
4. Sampling Exotic Fruits :- You can but exotic fruits from Tamil vendors at the far end of the Dam road, they sell passion fruit, organic carrot, and others, warth trying..

Echo Point Munnar

Echo Point is further next to Mattupetti dam and located at 15 km from Munnar enroute to top station. Echo point is basically Dam waters surrounded by hills and forest. Every call, whistle made from this step is echoed from the surrounding hills. There is a entry ticket of Rs 50/- to go at the bank of the waters


Things to do at Echo Point

1. There is a big market at Echo point, the shops sell here soveneirs, toys, CDs, Bags, and many exotic stuff. You can do some real value bargaining at Echo Point market.

Kundala Lake, (23 km from Munnar). 

This lake is very beautiful located amidst lush jungles. 


Things to do at Kundala Lake

1. Hire a pedal boat and explore the lake and its surroundings. 
2. There are rowing boats also available, bit you are suggested not to take these if you do not know how to row.
3. Pedal boats also available, each trip lasts around 30 min.


Top Station Munnar

Located at 37 km from Munnar on the Kerala and Tamil Nadu border.You can trek to the Observation Point from Anita's tea stall at the bus stop. It is a steep walk to the spectacular viewing area at Top Station. The rewards all come at this summit, where the air is crisp and the views sheer and dramatic. The craggy laterite peaks of the Western Ghats, the rolling plains and immaculately laid-out tea plantations are all around. one can see Kambam Valley, Tamilnadu to the east, Kundala Valley.

It offers Great views of the Western Ghats. Top station is one of the the "top"-tourist attraction. This place gives a real 'above the clouds' experience. Regular buses go to Top Station (1 hr) from Munnar. A jeep costs Rs 400. The area is known for the Neelakurunji plant, which flowers only once every 12 years. The flower is violet.

Munnar Attractions Towards Marayoor

Tata Tea Museum, 

Also known as the KDHP Tea Museum located Around 2 km on the Nallathany road, from Munnar. Tourists are then taken around the factory to understand how tea is made.Photography is allowed on payment of Rs. 20 however videography is strictly prohibited here. It is closed on Mon. There is a Rs. 75 ticket fee for adults.

Eravikulam (Rajamalai) National Park, 45 min from Munnar

Home to Nilgiri Thar - an endangered species of mountain goats, rolling grasslands and sholas, spread over 97 square km in the Rajamalai hills, having rare flora and fauna, Atlas moth (largest in the world), lion-tailed macaque, leopards, tigers, The Kurichi or Neelakurinji Flowers turn the hills of Rajamalai blue every 12 years. The next bloom will be in 2018. 

The walk along the park is very romantic and has some breath taking view.Park remains closed every year around February-March due to the breeding program of the Nilgiri Thar. 

Always check Before visiting Munnar if the park is open or not. Tickets can be bought from the counter for INR 55 per adult. Please be warned that if you do not reach the counter before 8:30 AM, the queue can get so long that it may take a couple of hours to get the tickets.The entire process of buying tickets, visiting park and coming back may take 4-5 hours.


Anamudi Peak - highest peak in Western Ghats

See the Anamudi Peak inside Eravikulam National Park, It is The highest peak (2,695 m) south of the Himalayas. Along the slopes of the hills are all kinds of rare flora and fauna.The name Anamudi literally translates to "elephant's forehead," a reference to the resemblance of the mountain to an elephant's head.

The Atlas moth, the largest of its kind in the world, is a unique inhabitant of the park. 

Other rare species of fauna found here are the Nilgiri Langur, the lion-tailed macaque, leopards, tigers. 

National park is an ideal place for trekking, facilities are provided here and tourists are allowed to go on foot up to 2 kms from Anamudi. Going up to the peak is no longer permissible unless you have special permissions from forest department.

Trek to the top of the peak is easy,The easiest route to the summit of Anamudi is a technically easy hike on grass slopes, starting from a rolling hill plateau with a base elevation of about 2,000 metres (6,600 ft). The north and south slopes are gentle, while the east and west slopes are steeper, with more difficult rock faces.

Marayoor - (Around 40 km from Munnar). 

Marayoor is the only place in Kerala with natural growth of sandalwood trees, natural caves with murals, and relics from late Stone Age civilisation. There is a sandalwood factory of the Forestry department of Kerala and a children's park extending across one hectare of land under the canopy of a single Banyan tree, all of which attract tourists in large numbers.

Marayur is also the only place in Kerala Ancient dolmens and rock paintings which date back to the Stone Age. Marayur claims to be a part of a Stone Age civilization that is as old as 10,000 B.C.

Megalithic Dolmens


Dolmens of Marayur

Also called Muniyaras, these dolmens belong to the Iron Age. These dolmenoids were burial chambers made of four stones placed on edge and covered by a fifth stone called the cap stone. 

Some of these Dolmenoids contain several burial chambers, while others have a quadrangle scooped out in laterite and lined on the sides with granite slabs. These are also covered with cap stones. Dozens of Dolmens around the area of old Siva temple (Thenkasinathan Temple) at Kovilkadavu on the banks of the River Pambar, and rock paintings on the south-western slope of the plateau overlooking the river have attracted visitors. Apart from the dolmens of Stone Age, several dolmens of Iron Age exist in this region especially on the left side of river Pambar as is evident from the usage of neatly dressed granite slabs for the dolmens. 

Dolmens of Munnar - With in 5 Kms Range

Covering additional 45km travel from Munnar to Marayoor will be tiring for most Travellers, but do not worry, Some of these dolmens are located within 5-10 km from your Hotel. If your hotel is in the Chinnakanal, Suryanelli, area then this Dolmen site is even closer, within 5 km from your hotel. It is located in the ‘Muttukad – Periyakanal” road near to Muttukad Village.

Unlike Dolmens of Marayaoor, the Muttukad Dolmen site has only 10 to 15 dolmens. 

How to reach

From Munnar town, Take National Highway 49 (NH49) towards Periyakanal, About 1km before Periyakanal tea factory, take the Bisonvalley Muttukad Road. Within 2 km on this road you will see a small makeshift board which shows the direction to the dolmen site. The dolmens are not visible from the road. You will need to walk approximately 100 meters from the road to reach the dolmens.

Cautions for Visiting Munnaar Dolmens

  • The road  to the dolmen site is very narrow and steep and has dangerous hair pin bends and sharp turns, so drive carefully or to arrange a driver who is familiar with the terrain.
  • Dolmens are located 100 meters walking distance from road side, way is through the village homes
  • Always visit Munnar Dolmens with Travel guide or Hotel staff
  • The Dolmens are located on a slippery rocky hillside. Please be very careful with kids as small slip will cause fall into the deep valley.
  • Avoid Munnar Dolmens, if it’s raining as many water streams run on this hill
  • There are no shops or hotels around this area.
  • Beware of leeches if its winter season.
  • Go only in the Day Time as night time is dangerous.

Walkway through the sandalwood forest

Marayur has more than 1000 species of flowering plants and is a well known repository of medicinal plants. There are 114 endemic species and the sighting of Aibizia lathamii, a critically endangered tree, was recently reported from the dry forests.

Chinnar - the wildlife sanctuary in Marayur - has recorded the largest number of reptilian species, including the mugger crocodile, in Kerala. With 225 recorded species of birds, it is one of the richest areas of south India in avian diversity. The forests in Marayur preserve a population of the endangered Grizzled Giant Squirrel. The rare white bison has been recently reported in Chinnar wildlife sanctuary. 

Maryoor contains a number of sandalwood forests, Processing of sandalwood and its associated oil forms part of local economy, a depot near Marayur town supporting this industry. Sandal wood  is a parasitic tree having a fragrant and close-grained yellowish heartwood. Sandalwood oil, also known as ‘liquid gold,’ is extracted from the roots and wood of sandalwood. This oil is a costly item marketed at a few choosy outlets all over the state. The 93 km² Marayur reserve forest is believed to have about sixty thousand naturally grown sandalwood trees.

History of Beautiful Munnar


In 1870 J.D. Munro, a European, identified Munnar as an ideal and absolutely fit location for Tea Plantations. In 1877 he leased 580 Sq Kilometers of land and in partnership with H. G. Turner of the Madras Civil Service, he founded the North Travancore Land Planting and Agricultural Society, and discoved that area is best suited for tea. The first tea plant was planted by A. H. Sharp at Parvathi, now in Sevenmullay estate.
