KINNAUR

Time in and time out, Kinnaur, along with Spiti and Lahaul, remained a forbidden land. It was completely cut from the rest of the world, and only a few people – officials, mountaineers and missionaries – were allowed visit the forbidden world. Today, however, common people are allowed to visit Kinnaur so that they can have a firsthand experience of the land of fairy tales. Indeed, Kinnaur is not less than a paradise, for it has several spectacularly beautiful attractions – orchards of apples, apricots and peaches, rich in flora and fauna, vineyards, snow clad peaks, etc. Kalpa is one of the major villages of Kinnaur. It has serene and breathtaking view all around, especially in the morning when one can see the rising sun kissing the snow-capped peaks with crimson and golden light
 

KALPA
Situated at the height of 2758 m above the sea level and 110 km from Sarahan, Kalpa is a beautiful and main village of Kinnaur. Across the river faces the majestic mountains of the Kinner Kailash range. These are spectacular sights early in the morning as the rising sun touches the snowy peaks with crimson and golden light.

ACCESS
Nearest airport (267 km) and railway station (244 km) is at Shimla. The route is on NH - 22 (The Hindustan Tibet Road) which bifurcates to Kalpa from Powari. Public transportation is easily available at Shimla and Rampur. One can also reach Kalpa via Manali - Rohtang Pass - Kunzam Pass - Kaza (400 km).
 
CLIMATE :
For winters, heavy woolens are recommended as temperature call fall to a very low point.  In summers, on the other hand, light woolens or cotton are required.

KAZA
 
The town of Kaza, situated along the Spiti river, is the headquarter of Spiti valley. Around 100 years ago, a well-known English poet Rudyard Kipling called Spiti “a world within a world” and a “place where the gods live” – a description that is undoubtedly true and will remain so for all time. Kaza is not only known for its heaven-like view but also for its colorful festivals. Owing to the central location of Kaza, it is also considered as a perfect place for trekking and mountaineering. The experience of the festivals, stark beauty and high mountains of Kaza lingers on as the most pleasant thing in the hearts and minds of the tourists for all time.
 
ACCESS
 
The nearest airports are at Kullu (Bhuntar, 250 km away) and Shimla (445 km). Kaza can be approached by road from Shimla (May to October) and from Manali (200 km) via Kuzam Pass (June to October).
 
CLIMATE 
 
Kaza is known as a cold dessert and doesn’t receive any rainfall. In winters, the temperature is dry and cold, so heavy woolens are recommended. In summers, the weather remains pleasant, so light woolens or cottons are required.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR INDIAN AND FOREIGN TOURISTS

The Kinnaur and Spiti area of Himachal Pradesh has been opened to Indian and Foreign tourists. While going via Shimla and Rampur - Kalpa, Recong Peo and Sangla Valley can be visited by Indians and Foreigners without any restrictions. To travel beyond Jangi in Kinnaur to Kaza in Spiti one requires an inner line permit for foreign nationals which can be obtained from the following offices:
District Magistrate - Shimla, Recong Peo (Kinnaur), Kullu, Keylong (Lahaul)
Sub District Magistrate (SDM) - Shimla, Rampur, Kalpa, Nichar, Keylong, Udaipur
Additional Deputy Commissioner Office in Pooh and Kaza.
 
The best place to get the permit is at Rampur and Recong Peo. The office of the SDM at Rampur is just opposite the Police Station in the main bazaar and the office of the District Magistrate at Recong Peo is near the bus station. The permit is free of cost and holds good for seven days. To get a permit, one must have a letter of introduction from a recognised travel agency, three passport size photos, and a photocopy of the front pages of the passport. Making several copies of the permit is suggested, as one may have to submit them at checkpoints on the way. Foreign nationals can travel with permits in a group of four or more persons. Foreign nationals cannot stay overnight between Jangi and Kaza.
 Indian nationals do not require any permit to travel in this area however retaining a proof of identity is suggested.

The Spiti is a recently inaugurated deluxe hotel, which is named after the Spiti river. The hotel is an ideal for all the tourists of Kaza as well as Spiti as it has the famous monasteries and the picturesque sites around it.

KEYLONG
Keylong, located at the heart of Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, is one of the most delightful and breathtaking regions in India. "Surely the God live here this no place for men" is what a renowned English poet, Rudyard Kipling, rightly said about the region. One who goes to the region certainly comes back with the everlasting memories.

ACCESS : By road the distance is 115 km from Manali, 188 km from Kaza, 373 km from Leh, 435 km from Chandigarh and 690 km from Delhi. HPTDC also plies regular coaches to Leh via Keylong during July to September. The nearest airport is Bhunter, 175 km from Keylong.
 
CLIMATE : Lahaul remains isolated from the outside world November to June due to heavy snowfall at Rohtang Pass. There is almost no rain even in the monsoon season. The climate always remains refreshing and dry as well. During day time, light woolens are recommended, but during the night, heavy woolens are required.
