Kanpur is situated on the bank of river Ganges and has been an important place in the history of modern India. It played a vital role during the first war of Independence of India in 1857. Sh. Ganesh Shanker Vidhayarthi and Sh. Chandra Shekhar Azad made Kanpur as their field of work against the British Colonialism . During the Freedom Struggle of 1857, Col. O. Neel, Commanded British India Army from Kanpur Cantt.Kanpur has also played a vital role in the field of education in general and technical in particular. Chirst Church College was established in 1896 A.D. The fist College of Commerce in India- B.N.S.D College, was established in the year 1914 A.D.The first agricultural College of Asia-Government College, was established in the year 1941 A.D. and Hart Court Butler Technological Institute (H.B.T.I.) was established in the year 1926 A.D. After the independence of India, a number of technical and research institutes such as I.I.T.,

Kanpur, National Sugar Institute, Leather Institute and Textile Institute were established at Kanpur.Kanpur was one of the main centers of industrial revolution in India. Towards the end of 19th Century, Sir John Burney Allens established a group of companies such as Kanpur Textiles, Cawnpore Wollen Mills (Lal Imli), Flex Shoes Company, Elgin Mills and North Tannery under the banner of British India Corporation having headquarter at Kanpur. In the beginning of 20th Century, Lala Kamlapat established a group of companies such as; J.K. Cotton Mills and J.K. Iron etc. under the banner of J.K. During the same period Sir J.P. Srivastava established New Victoria Mills. British Government also established a number of factories like; Ordnance Factory, Kanpur and Parachute Factory in 1886 to supplement their defence requirements. This was the time when Kanpur was known as the Manchester of India.At present it is rightly called as the industrial Capital of U.P. having the headquarters of many important State Government Departments, such as; Directorate of Industries, State Financial Corporation, U.P.S.I.D.C., U.P. Stock Exchange, Handloom Development Directorate and Directorate of Labour etc. connected with the industrial development of the State.
