Devprayag Tourist Guide

A small hill-town, At Devprayag, you can see the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers from the high road, In Devprayag, The final holy Ganga river is formed as it is last point of major confluence.

Devprayag is situated at an altitude of 475mts above sea level at the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi River. Devprayag is situated in Tehri Garhwal district and some part of Devprayag comes under Pauri Garhwal district. Devprayag is the last prayag (confluence) of Alaknanda River and from this point the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi River is known as Ganga. The town lies on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway, 71kms ahead of Rishikesh.

The town is the seat of the pundits of Badrinath Dham. The town of Devprayag holds great religious importance amongst Hindus as the divine Ganga River takes its real form from here. The town is named after Dev Sharma who led his ascetic life here and it is also believed that he was blessed with a glimpse of god. The place showers the tourists with its serene and divine natural beauty and it is also believed than Lord Rama and King Dushratha did penance here. There is an ancient Raghunathji Temple built above the confluence with massive rocks and it is believed that the temple was built more than ten thousand years ago.

The structure of the town was devastated by an earthquake of 1803 but it was subsequently repaired. The confluence has Brahma Kund on Bhagirathi River and Vashisht Kund on Alaknanda River. There is a place called Baitalshila and it is claimed that a bath in it can cure leprosy. Devprayag can be visited anytime of the year but try to avoid the monsoons as the water is muddy and there are chances of roads getting blocked due to landslides.

Prayag - Sangam - Confluence of Alaknanda & Bhagirthi - Birth of Mighty Ganga

Prayag is visible from the Road, It is reachable through the Bridge. Devprayag town is located around holy prayag and is a must visit. Place where Alaknanda and Bhagirthi meet, is well marked and has bathing ghat as well as worship area. There is daily evening aarti at the confluence. You must visit The Confluence to see the divinity of the place. It is said that lord Rama did pray at the confluence to pay homage to Sage Bhagirath at this place. There is a temple of Maa ganga also


Raghunath Temple, Devprayag

It is one the primary religious places of worship in the town which is devoted to Lord Ram and is known as Raghunath Temple. The temple also houses statues of Goddess Sita and Lord Lakshman. It was built by Raja Jagat Singh of Kullu and reveals about the history of existence of Lord Krishna and Lord Rama.


Dashrath shila Temple, Devprayag

Located on the banks of a water stream, Shanta, Dashrathshila Temple is a must see attraction of the city. It is believed that Shanta has been named after the daughter of King Dashratha. According to Hindus mythology, King Dashratha performed self-punishment at this place and a small hill is situated nearby this temple which is supposed to be the King Dashrath’s throne. Dashrathshila Temple is a famous temple for Hindus.


Kyunkaleshwar Mahadev Temple, Devprayag

A famous spiritual destination of Devprayag, Kyunkaleshwar Mahadev Temple was built by Adi Sankaracharya who was the founder of Advaita Vedanta. The temple is devoted to Lord Shiva, and houses idols of Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganapati and Lord Kartikeya.

Devprayag River Rafting Tour Package Itinerary ( Byasi Camp - Rudraprayag - Srinagar - Devprayag)

Day 1: Delhi - Rishikesh - Byasi (6-7 hours)

Drive from Delhi to Rishikesh in the morning. The adventure begins as soon as you step out of your vehicle at Byasi. Ferry across the river to the other side by raft. Allotment of tents will be done followed by lunch. Proceed for a nature trek in the afternoon and discuss the trip details with the group. Accompanied by light music, a bonfire will be lit in the evening. Dinner will follow.

Day 2: Byasi camp – Rudraprayag – Srinagar

After an early breakfast drive down to Rudraprayag and have lunch upon arrival. Attend a safety briefing about the trip, proceed to the river. Raft down Rudraprayag to Srinagar after negotiating some good rapids. Also visit the Dhari Devi temple. Continue rafting and upon arrival in Srinagar stay overnight at the hotel.

Day 3: Srinagar - Devprayag

After breakfast, raft down till Devprayag and stay at the hotel just above the confluence. Have dinner and stay overnight at the hotel.

Day 4: Devprayag – Byasi Camp

After breakfast, hit the confluence of the river rapids. Continue gentle floating through a gorge and stop by a secluded beach for lunch. Enjoy floating in the river and try paddling a kayak. Arrive at the campsite by tea time. Unwind by a bonfire with light music in the evening and enjoy snacks followed by dinner.

Day 5: Rishikesh-Delhi

After breakfast proceed for a raft trip from the campsite to Rishikesh. Stop for lunch by the beach and continue the rafting session after lunch till NIM beach. Change clothes there, have tea /coffee and later drive to back to Delhi.
