The word 'Akshardham' literally means 'the divine abode of the supreme power, as written in Hindu Vedas and Upanishads. Dedicated to 18th century saint 'Swaminarayan', the temple is managed by the Swaminarayan Sect. It took about Rs. 200 crore to build this pink sandstone cultural complex. Akshardham Mandir was inaugurated on November 6, 2005 in the presence of Former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. It is built in an architectural style quite similar to that of the Akshardham temple in Gujarat.
Akshardham temple is made of white marble and red sandstone. Its architecture is inspired by Mughal and Jain architecture and culture along Rajasthan, Orissa and Gujarat cultures.

Akshardham Temple boasts of 234 unmatched carved pillars, 20 shikhars, 9 domes, floral motifs, archs, a massive Gajendra Pith (plinth of stone elephants) and more than 20,000 statues, The temple is constructed without the use of steel and cement.
The main hall comprises 11 feet high statue of Lord Swaminarayan, is itself 141 feet high, 316 feet broad and 356 feet long. Along with a unique glimpse of the Hindu religion and Indian culture, the main temple exhibits several paintings and statues of great Indian saints. Built according to the ancient Sthaapatya Shastras of India, the temple has used about 6000 tons of pink sand-stone from Rajasthan. The temple complex has an IMAX theatre, a food court, a gallery and an open-air theatre to entertain and facilitate the devotees.

Hall of Values: The hall where audio-animatronics and unique 3-D dioramas are used to teach the universal values for mankind and to depict the life of Lord Swaminarayan. The disciples are taught the messages of ahimsa, prayer, endeavour, morality, vegetarianism and family harmony.
Giant Screen Film: A unique period film 'Neelkanth Darshan' presenting the story of an 11 year old child Yogi Neelkanth Varni. The film has been shot in 108 different locations across India with 30 huge settings and 45,000 cast in colourful costumes. IMAX feature on the early life of Swaminarayan as the teenage yogi.
Musical Fountain (Yagnapurush Kund): A unique blend of a musical fountain and a Vedic Yagna Kund. Measuring 300 ft x 300 ft, it is the world's largest Yagna Kund with 2,870 steps and 108 small shrines.
Garden of India: Also called 'Bharat Upvan'; well maintained lawns, lush gardens and magnificent bronze statues of great saints, warriors, freedom fighters, national figures and noted women personalities of India.
Yogihriday Kamal: An artificial lotus; built in the memory of Yogiji Maharaj, who dreamed of Akshardham. Every petal of Yogihriday Kamal stands for the auspicious sentiments of Yogiji and spreads the messages of faith in God and human being.
Boat Ride: A 12 minute exciting boat-ride that takes you way back 10,000 years to India's glorious past. During this small boat ride one comes to know about the discoveries and inventions of the renowned rishi-scientists of India, including the world's first university of Takshashila and the enchanting caves of Ajanta- Ellora.
Also known as Sahajanand Pradarshan, the Hall of Values features lifelike robotics and dioramas which display incidents from Swaminarayan's life, portraying his message about the importance of peace, harmony, humility, service to others and devotion to God. The Sahajanand Pradarshan is set in 18th century India and displays of 15 dioramas through robotics, fibre optics, light and sound effects, dialogues, and music.
The hall features the world's smallest animatronic robot in the form of Ghanshyam Maharaj, the child form of Swaminarayan.
Named Neelkanth Kalyan Yatra, the theatre houses Delhi's first and only large format screen, measuring 85-foot (26 m) by 65-foot (20 m). The theatre shows a film specially commissioned for the complex, Neelkanth Yatra, to recount a seven-year pilgrimage made by Swaminarayan made during his teenage years throughout India.
Mystic India, an international version of the film produced by BAPS Charities, was released in 2005 at IMAX theatres and giant screen cinemas worldwide. A 27-foot (8.2 m) tall bronze murti of Neelkanth Varni is located outside the theatre.
Known as the Yagnapurush Kund, it is India's largest step well. It features a very large series of steps down to a traditional yagna kund. During the day, these steps provide rest for the visitors to the complex and at night, a musical fountain show representing the circle of life is played to an audience which is seated on the same steps.
The fountain is named after the founder of the Hindu organisation, Shastriji Maharaj. The fountain measures 300 feet (91 m) by 300 feet (91 m) with 2,870 steps and 108 small shrines. In its center lies an eight-petaled lotus shaped yagna kund designed according to the Jayaakhya Samhita of the Panchratra shastra.
Also known as the Bharat Upavan, this garden has lush manicured lawns, trees, and shrubs. The garden is lined with bronze sculptures of contributors to India's culture and history. These sculptures include children, women, national figures, freedom fighters, and warriors of India, including notable figures such as Mahatma Gandhi.
The Narayan Sarovar is a lake that surrounds the main monument. The lake contains holy waters from 151 rivers and lakes that are believed to have been sanctified by Swaminarayan, including Mansarovar. Surrounding the Narayan Sarovar are 108 gaumukhs, symbolising Janmangal Namavali or the 108 names for god, from which holy water issues forth.
The Premati Ahargruh or the Premvati Food Court is a vegetarian restaurant modelled on the Ajanta and Ellora caves in Maharashtra, India and an Ayurvedic bazaar. The restaurant caters a variety of traditional dishes.
The Grand Temple had been in planning since 1968 as a vision of Yogiji Maharaj. Yogiji Maharaj, the spiritual head of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha had expressed his desire for wanting a grand temple built on the banks of the Yamuna river to two or three devotee families of Swaminarayan.
