What to do in Melbourne

City Circle Tram : The City Circle Tram is a must-do. For one, it gives you a nice overview of Melbourne's top tourist attractions. More importantly, it's free. Just look for a burgundy and cream tram on Flinders or Spencer streets, and hop right on. When you want to get off, push a red button (near the handrails) or pull down on the cord above your head.

Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne: One of the finest botanic gardens in the world, the Royal Botanical Gardens are one of Melbourne’s most glorious attractions. Sprawling beside the Yarra River, the beautifully designed gardens feature a global selection of plantings and specifically endemic Australian flora. Mini-ecosystems, such as a cacti and succulents area, herb garden and an indigenous rainforest, are set amid vast lawns. Take a book, picnic or Frisbee but most importantly, take your time.

Melbourne Central: Nearly 300 stores fill Melbourne Central, a shopping complex, which is located atop the city's central train station. Shops range from international brands like Calvin Klein to Australian retailers like Cocolàtte. Make sure to bring your camera along with your credit card. The shopping center's Shot Tower Square, with its historic, red brick tower and contemporary cone, is one of Melbourne's most iconic images to capture.

National Gallery of Victoria: Opened in 1861, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is the oldest art gallery in all of Oz. Australian artists are featured the most, although there are works from international masters, like Van Dyck, Monet, and Magritte. The gallery also earns praise for its space, which features tall ceilings and great lighting. Keep in mind that the museum's works are housed in two buildings: The Ian Potter Centre is located in Federation Square, while the main NGV International building is located on St. Kilda Road in the Southbank neighborhood. The Ian Potter Centre is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday; NGV International is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Monday.

Werribee Open Range Zoo: The Werribee Open Range Zoo differs from the Melbourne Zoo in that it offers an African safari-like experience. Although you can walk around and see some animals, the best part comes when you jump on the safari vehicle and drive among giraffes, zebras, hippos, bison, and more. Don't forget your camera. If you're deciding between the Melbourne Zoo and the Werribee Open Range Zoo, many visitors recommend the Werribee even though it's a little farther from the city center.

Phillip Island Nature Park: The Penguin Parade is Australia’s most popular wildlife attraction and home to the largest Little Penguin colony in the world. Every sunset, the hundreds to over a thousand wild Little Penguins emerge from the sea and march across the beach to their sand dune burrows. The Little Penguin is the world’s smallest (and cutest) penguin and the Penguin Parade is the best place to experience this completely natural phenomenon.

St Kilda Beach: St Kilda is one of Melbourne's most popular beaches because it's only a short jaunt from the city center. The beach is lined with shops, restaurants and cafés. Although St Kilda is now a coveted address, it used to be a little rough and tumble. And according to some visitors, nighttime brings out a different side of this area.

Melbourne Museum: This is Melbourne's natural history museum, and there are all sorts of wonders to peer at, like a huge whale skeleton and the preserved Phar Lap—Australia's late famous racehorse. Other exhibits like "Sam the Koala," an exhibit about devastating bushfires and enduring hope, have received glowing reviews from recent visitors. There's also an IMAX with a schedule of flicks fun for visitors of all ages.
