Art Works of Nicholas Roerich

One of Roerich's pet projects was cultural preservation. Roerich's Pact Or Pax Cultura ("Cultural Peace") is a treaty on Protection of cultural Values. In 1929, Roerich was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. April 15, 1935 the Roerich Pact was signed by the United States and Latin American nations, agreeing that "historic monuments, museums, scientific, artistic, educational and cultural institutions" should be protected both in times of peace and war, and identified by their flying a distinctive flag, the Banner of Peace, bearing the Pax Cultura emblem symbolized by a maroon on white consisting of three solid circles in a surrounding circle. The idea behind his Pax Cultura movement was to preserve the crucial link between culture and peace.

Nicholas Roerich died in Kullu on December 13, 1947 and his ashes were buried facing the mountains he loved and portrayed in many of his nearly seven thousand works.

Urusvati Himalayan Folk Art Museum, Naggar

Urusvati Himalayan Folk Art Museum, situated 100 m uphill Roerich Art Gallery near Naggar in Kullu District, was founded by Nicholas Roerich in 1928. Formerly, it was a research institute, where history, ethos, the spirit of the Himalayan region, and the traditional Indian and Tibetan medicines were studied.

A fine collection of embroidered items and folk arts are displayed here. Russian artifacts, musical instruments, dolls and dishes are some of them. Popular of the exhibits are the paintings made by Roerichs and other Indian and Russian artists. Stone carvings of gods, wood carvings, crystal pieces and some quotations from Agniyoga are among the vivid collectibles. The traditional costumes of Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Tibet and Ladakh are also housed here.

Naggar Castle

The Castle was converted into a rest house, a hundred year back and in 1978 this ancient building was handed over to HPTDC to run as a heritage hotel. This medieval Castle was built by Raja Sidh Singh of Kullu around 1460 A.D. The hotel overlooks the Kullu Valley and apart from the spectacular view and superb location this has a flavour of authentic western Himalayan architecture. Here, a gallery houses the paintings of the Russian artist Nicholas Roerich. Naggar also has three other old shrines. Hotel Castle is an unique medieval stone and wood mansion, once the home to the Raja of Kullu and now an HPTDC Heritage hotel.
