Best Time to Visit Lansdowne

The best time to visit Lansdowne is during the summer months of March to June when the weather is pleasant and suitable for outdoor activities like trekking, hiking and leisurely walks. Since summer is also the peak season, it is advised to make reservations for your hotel well in advance.

September to November:  if you're a nature lover then Lansdowne is at its best between September and November after the rains with greenery and breathtaking views of the majestic mountains.

December to February:  The winter months between December and February get very cold and often witness heavy snowfall with chances of landslides, so you should avoid visiting Lansdowne then, unless you're the adventurous type.  Kanvashram

Kanvashram, a sacred ashram located near Lansdowne hill station, is a gateway to Puri, the most sought temple town in India. This ashram is bordered by thick forests and hillocks, making it a beautiful place for feasting the eyes of tourists. A spectacular attraction nearby is the famous Malini River flowing near to this Ashram. This ashram bears mythological importance related to the Sage Kanvan. Garhwali Mess

Garhwali Mess is one of the oldest buildings in the hill station, which was built by the British in January 1988. The mess reflects the rich heritage of the Army and also of the destination in general. It is one of the old and finely preserved heritage buildings of Lansdowne.

The mess is considered to be an important museum in Asia, comprising atypical compilation of skin of wild animals, furnishings and trophies. There is a dial consisting of arrow symbols that direct the route for Nandadevi, Chaukhamba, Kamet and other snow-capped peaks of the Himalayan Range.

Hawaghar

Hawaghar is a serene place in Lansdowne from where tourists can enjoy view of the snow-capped Himalayan Range. This place is also great for trekking, which leads to the Khyber Pass along the road to Jaiharikhal. Bhim Pakora

Bhim Pakora is located in Dhura, about 2 km away from the Gandhi Chowk. It is believed that during the period of exile, the Pandavas stopped here and cooked food at this location. It is also believed that Bhim placed one rock on top of the other and is so well balanced that it never topples. This rock can be moved by tourists with just one finger, but it never falls down.

St. Mary’s Church

This church is located near the Tip-In-Top Point. In 1947, the church was not used any longer as it started to deteriorate. St. Mary’s Church was built by Col. A.H.B Hume of the Royal Engineers in the year 1895. The Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre converted it into a small museum, housing interesting pictures of the pre-independence era. This museum also houses the audio visual displays of the history of the regiment.

The Garhwal Rifles Regimental War Memorial

The Garhwal Rifles Regimental War Memorial at Lansdowne was established on 11th November 1923. Lord Rawlinson of Trent, the then Commander in Chief of India, founded this museum. A major tourist attraction of the destination, this war memorial is located at the Parade Ground. It is one of the few tourist attractions that are visited by almost every traveler coming to Lansdowne. Tourists who are interested in knowing about the Indian army also throng this place.

Bhulla Tal

Bhulla Tal is an artificial lake dedicated to the young Garhwali youth of Garhwal Rifles, who rendered help for construction of this lake. This tourist attraction gets its name from the Garhwali word, Bhulla which means younger brother. Here the tourists can also enjoy boating and paddling. A children park, bamboo machan and fountains have been erected here for entertainment of tourists.

Tip-In-Top

Tip-In-Top also known as Tiffin Top is situated in the ridge near St. Mary’s Church. This is a popular spot among tourists visiting Lansdowne. From this spot, tourists can get view of the beautiful snow covered Himalayas and some parts of Tibet. Tiffin top is also famously known as the “Dorothy's Seat” which is located at a height of around 2300 meters on the Ayarpatta hills. This place was built by the British Army officer Col J.P. Kellet. This Museum is a motivational hall named after the famous Darban Singh Negi. This museum was inaugurated in the year 1983. The Regimental Museum houses numerous antique pieces, belonging to the Garhwal Rifles.
