Omkareshwar Mamleshwar Jyotirling - Overview

Omkareshwar is fourth jyotirlinga, situated in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, about 80 Kms from Indore. Omkareshwar is on an island called Mandhata with in the Narmada river.  The shape of the island is said to be like the OM symbol. There are two temples here, one is Omkareshwar, and another one is Mamleshwar or Amareshwar.

After bath in the morning, first visit Mamleshwar temple on one side of river, This is an ancient temple, there are 7-8 other temples in the Mamleshwar Temple campus. Omkareshwar temple and Mamleshwar temple are different and both are considered as One jyotirlingas,

These are located on opposite banks of holy river Narmada, steam boats are used to go on either side also two bridges are there to cross the river. 

Omkareshwar island is formed on river Narmada, Near by is a major project, Called Omkareshwar Dam is a gravity dam on the Narmada River just upstream of Mandhata in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh, India. It is named after the Omkareshwar temple located just downstream.

1. There are no Restaurants on the Omkareshwar side of temples, If you want to eat you need to go to Mamleshwar side.

For booking the Bashma Arthi, the forms are distributed at 1030 -1200 hrs. First get the form from the counter ( near the main entry to the temple). 4 persons are allowed in a group. The person has to show his Photo ID proof to collect the form. VoterID/ Govt issued IDs/Passports are accepted. Please note PAN card ID is not accepted. U will have to produce the original and a photo copy at the counter to get the form. If u need pass for more persons suitably carry ID proofs for such group. Normally they issue around 100 forms which allows around 400-500 persons. This is worth trying as it is a one time experience. The passes can be collected in the evening around 1930 hrs. U will have to carry ur original ID proof at all time ; to get the form; to collect the pass & also while entering temple in the morning. Men shoud wear dhotis.

One should visit this at least once in their life time.


1.    Please carry original ID Proof.
2.    Fill the form and submit along with photo copy of ID Proof between 10.00 AM to 1.00 PM for the next day dharshan. It is very limited and on first cum first basis.
3.    Collect the token between 8.00 PM to 11.00 PM by verifying the name in the list displayed.
4.    Be in the queue around 2.00 AM early morning.
5.    Need to dhothi & for ladies to be with saree.
6.    Temple Authorities will start verifying your pass from 2.30 and allow inside.
7.    Perform Jal Abhishek on shiva linga and then sit in the hall residing opposite to Main gopuram. It will be good if you sit as straight to idol, so that it view is clear
8.    Abishekam will be performed first and then starts harathi with lots of damarukha sounds. It will be amazing to see and lures us to dance.
9.    After completion of harathi you can go for dharshan with in the premises.

About Shayan Arti - Omkareshwar - Must Attend

  • You must attend the Shayan Aarti at 9:30 PM in evening at Omkareshwar Jyotirling temple.
  • Shayan arati s held in the sanctum Sanctorum of Omkareshwar Jyotirling Temple.
  • There is a beautiful bed and a palna on which it is believed that lord Shiva sleeps at night.  
  • The shayan aarti is carried out with only instruments (Not vocal) and the prominent instrument played during aarti is Damru.
  • A chousar / Chopad (An ancient game played in india like chess ) is placed and it is believed that in the morning the settings of the game is found changed as lord.Shiva plays Chosar in the night.

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the most famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingams, which are supposed to be the most sacred abodes of Shiva. It is located in the ancient city of Ujjain in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. The temple is situated on the side of the Rudra Sagar lake. Kal Bhairava

According to the Saivite culture, the veneration of the eight Bhairavas is an integral feature of the Hindu customs. The main among these Bhairavas is the Kal Bhairava, assumed to be constructed by the monarch Bhadresen, near the riverbanks of Shipra. This shrine has been cited in the Avanti Khanda of Skanda Purana.

Omkareshwar Temple

The temple of Omkareshwar is one of the most popular pilgrimage spots in India. Situated on Mandhata island (shaped like the holy “Om” sign), the temple is considered to be one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. Omkareshwar temple is closely associated with Mammaleshwar temple, as both these temples are deemed as single form of Lord Shiva. The island, formed on the course way of river Narmada, is 20 km from Mortakka in Madhya Pradesh.

Legend has it, Ambarish and Mucchkund, the two sons of King Mandhata, practised austerities in this place and pleased the lord. They also performed various other religious sacrifices, which made Shiva to fulfil their wishes. The temple, which follows the Nagara style of architecture, can be reached via ferry from the riverbanks.

Rajwada is the historical palace of the Holkars. It was built about two centuries ago and is located near the Chhatris in the main square. An ancient religious centre, Ujjain is famous for the Kumbh Mela, a month-long fair attended by thousands of Hindu devotees. Locally known as Sinhast,the fair is held every 12 years, beginning on the full moon in the month of Chaitra (March-April) when Jupiter is in Scorpio and the Sun is in Aries.

              

Ujjain Ardha Kumbh (half Kumbh)

The Ardha Kumbh(half Kumbh) is held every six years. Legend has it that a kumbh (pot) containing nectar arose from the depths of the ocean because of a tug-of-war between the gods and the demons. The ocean was churned with the help of the snake Vasuki, and Mount Meru.

A fight broke out between the gods and the demons over the pot of nectar. In the ensuing conflict, drops of nectar fell on the places that are now Prayag(Allahabad), Nasik, Hardwar and Ujjain.

Ujjain Shivaratriis

The age-old festival of Shivaratriis dedicated to Shiva, the Destroyer in the Hindu Holy Trinity of Creator-Preserver-Destroyer. Devotees flock to the temples at dawn and make special offerings of berries and belpatra or leaves of the wood apple. The Shiva linga (Shiva’s symbolic phallus) is bathed with milk and honey and worshipped on Shivaratri.
