Gir, popular name for  part of Gujarat in India is the only place where this magnificent animal is found today. The Gir is known all over the world as the last home of the Asiatic lion.

Why is the Asiatic lion endangered?

The Asiatic lion is endangered largely because of hunting by humans after firearms became widespread. But now as per latest update of 2017, by gir forest department over a 100 lionesses in Gujarat's Gir forest are pregnant. The Gir Sanctuary is the only home for the Asiatic lions.

Asiatic Lions Facts

  • There are only several hundred Asiatic lions in the wild, and they only live in the Gir Forest, India, in an area that is smaller than Greater London.
  • The male Asiatic lion has a relatively short, sparse and darker mane compared to the fuller mane of the African lion. As a result, the male Asiatic lion's ears tend to remain visible at all times.
  • The most distinguishing characteristic of the Asiatic lion is the longitudinal fold of skin that runs along its belly. This is absent in African lions.
  • The lions feed on larger animals such as the zebra, sambar, chital and so on. They also sometimes steal from the other meat eating animals such as the hyenas, wild dogs and leopards.
  • The lions create and mark their territories with urine or by making scratch marks on the trees. The smell of their urine is very strong and lasts for the long period of time. If any lion from the other pride tries to infiltrate or enter into the marked territory, then he is either chased away or killed.
  • The Asiatic lions spend most of their time (approximately 20 hours a day) sleeping or resting. They generally hunt in the night when the prey can be quite easily caught. When the male lion is not resting, then he guards its territory by patrolling it.
  • The lions are considered to be the national animals of many countries such as England, Luxembourg, Singapore, the Netherlands and Bulgaria.
