Amarnath Yatra - 2018: Overview

The sacred shrine of Amarnathji is an abode of Lord Shiva and is situated at the altitude of 3888m.Its the religious destination known for Hindu pilgrimage in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. The base camp of Amarnathji at Baltal is easily accessible bus via Jammu (384) and Srinagar (65km).The devotees can Srinagar from all parts of India by connecting flight from New Delhi.

Lord Shiva is considered as the creator of the world and destroyer of the evil. He resides in Amarnathji in form of Shivling made of Ice. “Amar” means immortality in Hindi. The mythology says that Lord Shiva detailed the intricacies and revealed the secrets of immortality to his beloved “Parvati” in the cave of Amarnath. He chooses this cave far away from the world so that “Devi Parvati” be “His” only audience. But the secrets were overheard by the pair of pigeons who became immortal. 1) Due to Bad Weather Helicopter flight is canceled, next day's accommodation has to be taken care by the guest directly. Assistance can be given by our staff at sonamarg and Transportation would be charged Rs 2000 extra per day by our staff at sonamarg.

2) The Schedule flight is cancelled due to bad weather or technical reasons, advance booked passenger would get the priority next day.

3) A helicopter ticket has to be stamped & signed by the officials of Deccan Charter's at Baltal or Srinagar for full refund. Passenger directly can courier the tickets along with the bank details, full address to avail the full refund.

Preparing for Amarnath Yatra by achieving Physical fitness 

In order to perform smooth and trouble free  Amarnath yatra, it is advisable to  start preparatory morning / evening walk of about  4 - 5 kms per day atleast a month prior to Yatra. Apart from above If you can have  daily massage of your body with body oil, preferably mustard (sarson) oil and  bathe in the lukewarm water , this will  help your body to become flexible and you will not feel tired. 

Moreover the effect of sudden change in temperature & climate on you  will be reduced to a large extent . As oxygen gets rare some times , It is better to improve your physical fitness  .  To increase your body efficiency of oxygen , it is very good to start deep breathing exercises . The Yoga exercise like Prana Yam can be learnt.

Carry needful warm clothings and wind shield and proper shoes. 

You have to trek through  high mountains and there are  cold winds blowing . So  during the Yatra,  take Woollen Clothings, Small Umbrella (only Head Cover with 

Elastic around Forehead and supported by strap around the chin),  Wind shield, Raincoat, Waterproof Shoes ( Preferably Hunter Shoes), Torch, Stick, Cap (preferably 

Monkey Cap), Gloves, Jacket, Woollen Socks and Trousers. These are essential as the climate   is unpredictable and changes abruptly  from sunny weather to rain and snow. The temperature may abruptly fall even up to -5 degree C.

Reach Srinagar by direct flight from Chandigarh or New Delhi. However, the guests coming from rest of Indian cities should first reach New Delhi, and then take the interconnecting flight to Srinagar. Srinagar is also approachable from Jammu after covering the distance of 300km. Jammu is connected to rest of the India by the Indian Railways. By road, guests should take NHA1 Highway via Chandigarh to reach Srinagar. Depending on their requirement guest are picked up at Srinagar Airport/Srinagar Bus Station and taken to their hotel. Next day, the guests are taken to Baltal from Srinagar by cab. Thereafter, by the helicopter guest are taken to Holy Amarnathji cave.

The Event of Amarnathji Yatra 2018 (Few tips and information)

As the story goes, the holy cave of Amarnathji was discovered by the Sheppard named Buta Malik long back. The place also has references in the Hindu relics of Puran. The Amarnathji Yatra is feasible only in small time frame of about one and half month. It is like an annual affair in month of June and August. The schedule and dates are decided by the Government and are influenced by the auspicious Hindu month “Sharavan” In current year of 2018; it is scheduled to take place between  28^th June to 10^th August. The children below 13 year and pregnant women are not allowed to traverse the rough and long terrain of Amarnathji. Guests are advised to carry spare change of clothes in waterproof bag in case of some adverse climate. It is also advisable to keep dry eatables with high energy contents like dryfruits, chocolates and roasted grams .Few other recommended things are umbrellas, woolen clothes raincoats and wind-cheaters.

Shankaracharya Temple of Srinagar

 Complement your Pilgrimage to Amarnathji by a must visit to at Shankaracharya temple of Srinagar. Believed to come in existence at around 200 BC it is essentially the temple of Lord Shiva.It is believed that Shiv- ling of the temple was established by Adi Shankaracharya ji. Since then it is known by his name. The temple is located at the elevation of 6,077ft at the Pas phar.It is also called Jyteshwar temple by its followers.

Dal Lake

Jammu to Pahalgam (315 km) – The distance between Jammu to Pahalgam can be covered by Taxi / Buses. Taxi and Buses are  available at J&K Tourist Reception Centre Raghunath Bazaar in the morning. Alternativly pilgrims can also come to Srinagar by air and then move to Pahalgam by road

From Baltal Holy Cave is just 14 Kms.

This distance can be covered by foot / Ponies. However, Dandies are also available for handicapped and old aged pilgrims.
The width of the pebbled (kuchha) road is a bit narrow as compared to the Chandanwari-Holy Cave route, moreover , there are some steep rises & falls on the way , as compared to the Chandanwari route, but pilgrims can return back to base camp Baltal through this route only in one day.

It is 96 KM from Srinagar .This distance can be covered by car,bus or taxi. Pahalgam is  known all over the world  for its beauty. It is small town situated on the banks of Lidder River. It is surrounded by high mountains. All essentials can be bought here. Good Hotels are  available for accommodation. However the arrangements for stay and Langar are also made  by the Non Government  Service Organisations.

ABOUT CHANDANWARI: 

The distance from Pahalgam to Chandanwari is 16km. The route is good .It can be covered by road transport also. Mini buses are also available from Pahalgam to reach Chandanwari. The trail runs along the Lidder River . The route is scenic. Food is available here. Pilgrims camp at Pahalgam or Chandanwari on the first night

ABOUT PISSU TOP :  

From Chandanwadi the actual trek starts, As the Yatra proceed further from Chandanwari one climbs a height to reach Pissu Top. It is said  that to be first to reach for darshan of  Bhole Nath Shivshankar there was a war between Devtas and Rakshas . With the power of Shiv , devtas could kill the rakshas in such large number that the heap of their dead bodies has resulted in this high mountain.

ABOUT SHESHNAG: 

This second day’s trek of 12 kms  from Chandanwari is through Pissu Top and reaches Sheshnag – a mountain which derives  its name from its Seven Peaks, resembling the heads of the mythical snake. The Journey to Sheshnag follows steep inclines on the right bank of a cascading stream and wild scenery untouched by civilisation. 

The second night’s camp at Sheshnag overlooks the deep blue waters of Sheshnag lake, and glaciers beyond it. Pilgrims can take bath and get their fatigue alleviated. It is beautiful and scenic.

ABOUT PANCHTARNI:  

From Sheshnag one has to climb steep height up across Mahagunas Pass at 4276 mtrs.(14000 ft) for 4.6 KM and then descending to the meadow lands of Panchtarni at a height of 3657 mtrs (12000 ft). The last camp enroute to the Holy Cave is made here on third day.

Precautions at Panchtarni

Here one faces cold winds which cause the  skin to crack. Hence cold cream / Vaseline are very useful for protection of skin. Some Yatris are also effected by deficiency of oxygen .Some may get the feeling of vomiting . So dry fruit like Allu Bukhara ,sour and sweet  eatables like Lemon are useful to control these symptoms .  

The route to Mahagunas is full of rivulets, water falls, springs. Panchtarni is a very beautiful place in the feet of BHAIRAV MOUNT. Five Rivers flow  here, Legend says that these have emerged from Lord Shiva's Hairs/Jata .

6. SHRI AMARNATH Ji Holy cave:  

The Sanctum Sanctorum of Shri Amarnath Ji is coming very near, it is now only 6 kms from Panchtarni, there is no place to stay near Holy cave, It is also not permitted to camp near by, hence  pilgrims need to start in the  early hours of the morning from Panchtarni.

On the way to The Holy Cave one comes  across  the Sangam of Amravati and Panchtarni. It is recommended to take bath at Amravati before going for Darshan.

White Soil , Bhasam is also found near the cave, It is realy surprising and fill devotees with divinity and Bhasam represents Lord Shiva, The pilgrims apply this Holy soil to their body and then go for Shivlingam Darshan. There are two smaller Shivlings one of Maa Parvati and other of Shri Ganesh. 

It may be noted that after having  early Darshan of the Shivlinga at Holy Cave one can return to Panchtarni well in time the same day .

After Coming Back from Amarnath Ji Darshan, Some Pilgrims prefer to take rest in panchtarni Camp. It is recommended to camp in Panchtarni. while the touch trekkers come back to Sheshnag.
