Boat in Nameri National Park

Nameri national park is famous for its elephants and other animals including tigers, leopards, gaurs, wild pigs, sambars, etc. and also for being a bird watchers paradise. Safaris are available and are the most popular way to create a trip full of excitement, into the national park.

There are no motorable roads so you will have to hire a boat to get across the river, from where a hike through the forest will reveal amazing beauty and other wild secrets of the area. It is advisable to reach the park early as boats may not be available at noon.

The river rafting is held at south-east side of the park on river Jai Bharali. The rafting route is 13 km long and takes around 3 hours, a great, tiring and enjoyable experience.  After a couple of hours drifting down the river, guides pull the rafts onto the bank near the Nameri Forest Camp.

One of the best ways to explore the entire length of Manas National Park is through a jeep safari. There are jeeps available on rent. A guide accompanies you during the safari that also takes care of driving the jeep around. There are three major interstate transport expresses - two of which originate from New Delhi (Rajdhani and Brahmaputra Mail) and the third one is from Kolkata. Murkeongselek is the nearest railway station. It is about 70 kms from Dibrugarh airport.

Kaziranga has been the theme of several books, songs, and documentaries. The park celebrated its centennial in 2005 after its establishment in 1905 as a reserve forest.

Kaziranga National Park Closing Dates

The Park is open daily from 1st November to 30th April i.e. for 6 (six) months, unless due to the rains in any exceptional year the park has to be closed earlier by the management for safety reasons.

 One horned Rhino in Assam

The Great one horned rhino is commonly found in Nepal, Bhutan and in Assam, India. It is confined to the tall grasslands and forests in the foothills of the Himalayas. The Indian Rhinoceros can run at speeds of up to 25 mph (40 km/h) for short periods of time and is also an excellent swimmer.  An increase in rhino poaching in the northern region of Assam has been witnessed. There was a period, when poaching activities rose in the state affecting many wildlife species particularly one-horned rhinos. As a result, one of the major issues of concern for wildlife conservation authority of Kaziranga, Manas and Pobitora wildlife sanctuary was to protect the animal and prevent the trade of prohibited wildlife.

About Nameri National Park

Nameri National Park is a national park in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas in the Sonitpur District of Assam, India, about 35 km from Tezpur. Total area of the park is about 137 Km2. Nameri wildlife Sanctuary was declared declared as National Park in the year of 1998. The favorite activities or the major attractions of Nameri National Park includes river rafting, which is a very popular way to enjoy one’s time at the park and catch a glimpse of the unique species of birds found here.

Manas wildlife sanctuary information

Manas Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the State of Assam in North-East India, a biodiversity hotspot. Covering an area of 39,100 hectares, it spans the Manas river and is bounded to the north by the forests of Bhutan. It is home to a great variety of wildlife, including many endangered species, such as the tiger, pygmy hog, Indian rhinoceros and Indian elephant. The park is also home to some of the rare wildlife species including one horned rhinos, leopards, clouded leopards and the amazing black panthers. Apart from the wild beasts, the place is haven for local and migratory bird- A paradise for watchers.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, situated in the flood plains of River Brahmaputra in the district of morigaon. The extent of the protected area is 38.81 sq km lays between latitude 26012' N to 26015' N and longitude 91059' E to 92005' E Pobitora originally was a grazing reserve of erstwhile nagaon district. Home to the densest population of One-horned Rhinos in the world, the Pobitora Wildlife sanctuary is a small heaven for the wildlife lovers, situated 30 km to the east of Guwahati. It is one of the two treasure troves of the famed and endangered one-horned Rhinos in the world coupled with an amazing birdlife.  The dense population of Rhinos allows one a greater chance of sighting the endangered creature while on Elephant or jeep safaris.

 Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is situated 15 km from Jorhat. Spread across 1915 hectares of land, Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary was declared the status in 1997. A national park known for some of the best opportunities for the photography of primates, Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary has unique floral diversity consisting of Assam plains alluvial semi-evergreen forests with pockets of wet evergreen covering a compact area of only 20.98 sq km. A variety of evergreen shrubs and herbs make up the lower canopy and ground layers.
