Manimahesh Yatra by Trek: Overview

Manimahesh Lake is situated at Pir Panjal Range of Himalayas 27 Kms from Bharmour at the foot of Manimahesh Kailash. According to the Hindu religious aspect, Manimahesh Kailash peak stands high close to the lake and is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva. This trek covers Manimahesh Kailash & Lake with round trip via Kugti village and back journey via Gourikund and Dhancho. This route also covers the Famous Temple of ancient Chaurasi Temples & Goddess Brahmani Mata at Bharmour with Kartik temple and Mata Marali Temple at Kugti. The lake is the venue of a highly revered pilgrimage trek undertaken during the month of August/September corresponding to the month of Bhadon according to Hindu calendar, on the eighth day of the New Moon period. It is known as the ‘Manimahesh Yatra’. The Government of Himachal Pradesh has declared it as a state-level pilgrimage.

For the trekkers the journey to Manimahesh Kailash commences from the month of Mid May and continues till October. It is approximately a 9 days trek starting from Delhi and is one of the easiest treks in the Himachal Himalayan region.


About Manimahesh fair

It is believed that during the fair time both Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati gets the bath in the Lake. For this holy moment lacks of people comes from the country and abroad to take holy bath in the Manimahesh Lake. Providing a rare occasion to see and study the customs and rituals of the local people. And the glorious view of Manimahesh Kailash touches the hearts of visitor in the morning and at the time of sun rising. About one kilometer ahead is the Shiva Kalotri spring-said to have its source in Lord Shiva's feet. After a short run reaches the Manimahesh Lake in this shallow circular lake gives it an enchanting appearance. A roofless temple, conspicuous with many iron trinkets, is seen on the opposite side. As per legends it is necessary to take bath in Brahmani’s pool before Manimahesh Lake. Start the tour from Pathankot and proceed to Dalhousie. It is around 85 km and take 2-3 hours. After arrival check into hotel take lunch and some rest there. After that visit some local sightseeing of Dalhousie like Panchpula, Dainkund and Satdhara Falls. After that came back to hotel and overnight stay at hotel.

Panchpula: Panchpula is located at a distance of around 3 km from Dalhousie. One of the famous picturesque spots in the region, the word Panchpula means five bridges. It is the place where a descending stream pours into and feeds several pools. The main stream that supplies water to cities of Dalhousie and Balloon is the Panchpula stream. The stream originates from the northern side of Dayakund, which then cuts through a ravine to fall into the water bodies located in Panchpula. A monument or a samadhi has been built where several streams meet at Panchpula in the memory of Sardar Ajit Singh, who was a great revolutionary.

Dainkund Peak: Dainkund Peak, perched at an altitude of 2755 metre, is the highest mount in Dalhousie. Tourists can enjoy 360° view of the entire valley from this peak. The sound of the breeze passing through the trees makes a musical sound, due to which this peak has also acquired the name, the singing hill. The top of this hill is occupied by the Indian Air Force and from there a left turn will take tourists to the Pholani Devi Temple. One of the most interesting facts about this temple is that, except a trident there is nothing inside the temple premises.

After breakfast at Dalhousie we will move forward to visit the Kalatop wildlife sanctuary, then in the direction of Khajjiar.  Enroute visit Kalatop and Khajjiar, Take pleasure of the natural pictorial beauty of Mini Switzerland and take lunch. After having lunch we will move to Bharmour through Chamba. You will check into the hotel after reaching at Bharmour and later in the evening, visit at the Chaurasi Temple and the grand Aarti.

Khajjiar: Khajjiar is one of the famous retreats among the visitors. Khajjiar is famous for the popular Khajji Naga shrine dedicated to the serpent god from which the name is believed to have been derived. You can also enjoy trekking and adventurous activities at khajjiar. It is also Known as Mini Switzerland.

Chaurasi (84 ) Temples:  The quaint little town of Bharmour is held in high regard for it is the pious earth of this place that houses the Chaurasi Temple. It is in fact a complex housing many temples with the Lakshmi Devi, Ganesh, Manimahesh and Narsimha being the main ones. It is around these temples that the activities, culture and customs of the people of the area revolve. The splendid mountains all around embrace it in their folds and add majesty to an already devout atmosphere. It is also known as the Chaurasi Khamba for the exquisite 84 pillars that form a part of the temple complex.

 

Early in the morning troop will move to the Brahmani temple. Brahmani Mata temple complex is at the top of the ridge, three kilometers away from the Bharmour and with in 2 hours will reach you at Brahmani Temple through village Malkauta. After holy dip in pool and passing some time lunch will be provided to the troop. After lunch troop will move to Bhim Godda and Ghararu to watch more natural and scenic beauty of Bharmour. In evening troop will back to Bharmour. After spending the whole day at Brahmani and Ghararu return back to Bharmour in evening.

Bharmani Mata Temple: Brahmani Mata temple complex is at the top of the ridge, 4km away from the Bharmour. The place is mainly known for Goddess Brahmani Mata. According to a local legend and people believe that the Bharmour was called Brahmpura after Brahmani Devi. When Lord Shiva went to Manimahesh Kailash granted a boon to goddess Brahmani Devi that all persons intending to go on pilgrimage to Manimaheshmust have a dip in their holy pool. Failing this, their pilgrimage would not be acceptable to Lord Shiva. That’s by every visitor firstly take bath in Brahmani’s holy pool before Manimahesh Lake.

 

Bharmour to Hadsar is 14 kms straight trail joined with road. Early in the morning after breakfast troop will move to the Hadsar Village through taxi. And will enjoy the beauty of Hadsar village, Shiva Temple. From Hadsar actual trek will start so move to the Dhancho and climbs gradually along the Gauri stream coming from the lake. In between your trek enjoy to have packed lunch and the proceed to Dhancho. The path ascends in dense forest for about 3Km.  As height is gained the tree line is left behind and the trail works through birch trees and bushes up to the alpine meadows of Dhancho. The camp ground is seen across the Gauri stream, near a attractive waterfall. It wills takes 5 – 6 hours and spends the left day at Dhancho.Overnight stay at Camp.

 

After taking light breakfast early in the morning troop will move ahead. Two routes lead to the lake.  Banddar Ghati the old one, up the left side of the stream. The path is steep and tiring. A new mule road has been constructed which is a little longer but less steeper than Banddar Ghati.  This climbs to the right and traverses a ridge for about 2 Km. It then bears left, crosses the Gauri stream through bridge and mounts steadily for another 1.5 km reach up to Sunderashi famous for their beautiful flowers and Medicinal herbs. After that a more gradual ascent along the rocky path passes near cliffs seen to the left. After another 2 Km through the Bhairo Ghati trail again climbs steeply for one hour and reaches Gauri Kund.  Gauri is another name of Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. A dip in this lake is considered sacred because it is believed that Parvati used to bath here.  Only ladies are allowed to take bath in this Kund, few meters ahead is the Shiva Kalotri spring-said to have its source in Lord Shiva's feet.  The trail once again crosses the Gauri stream and after a short ascent reaches the Manimahesh Lake.
 
Manimahesh Lake is this shallow circular lake gives it an enchanting appearance and gives the pleasant view of Manimahesh Kailash. After bath take lunch and spend some hrs at Manimahesh Lake. After spending time at glorious Lake come back to Gaurikund for night stay in camp.

 

After taking light breakfast early in the morning troop will move Shiva Kalotri. A trek of half hours will reach at Shiva Kalotri. Shiva Kalotri have a spring, it is considered that its water is coming from Manimahesh Kailash. Few devotees take holy bath at Shiva Kalotri. After Shiva Kalotri next destination is Kamal Kund climb for half an hour toward the foot of Manimahesh Kailash. The trek is steep and gradual but minimum percentage of oxygen in environment also leads to more tiredness. The trek of two kilometers over rough path and boulders will take to Kamal Kund. Even you can find here very big glacier up to the month of August. 

After August glacier melt totally but the fear of snow fall is always there in the mind of trekkers. Stay here for one hour, after taking holy dip in the lake return back to Gaurikund, the way we went to Kamal Kund. The back journey is not tough as the trek is downhill but trek carefully. Little bit carelessness will create a very big problem for visitors. After reaching Gaurikund take lunch and rest a while then move ahead downhill toward Dhancho through Bhairoghati and Sunderashi.

 

After taking light breakfast early in the morning troop will move down hill toward Hadsar and will reach within two hours. From Hadsar by taking taxi will reach Bharmour. Enroute Have lunch from Hadsar to Bharmour. After reaching Bharmour check into hotel and overnight stay at hotel.

After breakfast check out from hotel and Proceed to Pathankot. It is around 180 km and take 5-6 hours to arrive. In between your Journey have lunch at Chamba. After that proceed to Pathankot. Our representative will drop you at Pathankot.

Dalhousie:

St. John church: St. John's Church, oldest church of the town carries immense historical significance. Constructed during the rule of Britishers in India, this church was founded by the protestant missionaries.  Located amidst beautiful natural backdrop, this church is one of the most visited churches of the town. Satdhara Falls: Satdhara Falls, located on the way to Panchpula is one of the most popular sightseeing attractions of Dalhousie. Perched at an altitude of 2036 m above sea level, the place has derived its name from the seven beautiful springs. It is believed that these springs have several therapeutic values. This is because water in these springs comprises mica, which is known as 'Gandhak' in local language. The mica has several medicinal properties, which helps in curing many diseases and ailments.

Kalatop Wildlife sanctuary: Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the district of Chamba, is one of the most popular as well as most frequented sanctuaries in state of Himachal Pradesh. Popularly known as the Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary, the entire forest is covered with the thick foliage of deodar trees. In addition the sanctuary is also home to several animals and birds. Best Time to Visit Manimahesh Kailash Trek

Mid- June to Mid- October

Till July, there are high chances that trekkers will spot snowfall at high passes. But by the end of August, the amount of snow considerably reduces. As the months proceed, one might experience rainfall towards Kullu-Manali valley but at the high passes, Spiti, the weather remains sunny. Moving further, in September, the day temperature may range between 12°C and 20°C. However, the night is relatively chilly as temperature may dip to minus (-2 to 6 °C), also, there is the slightest possibility of snow fall. With the onset of October, the day temperature hovers around 12-18 °C and evenings and nights are comparatively colder (- 6 to 4 °C).


How to Reach Manimahesh kailash Trek:

By Road:

  • You can take a direct bus from Delhi/Chandigarh to Chamba and then come to Bharmour by bus or taxi.

  • There are few direct buses to Chamba from Pathankot and one direct bus to Bharmour from Pathankot in the morning.

  • There are many buses (once in 30 minutes) from Chamba to Bharmour (61km, ~100 INR, 2.5 hours).

  • Few buses (2 in a day) and shared jeeps (Depending upon tourists) ply between Bharmour to Hadsar (13 km, 30 minutes, 30/40 INR). It is very difficult to catch a ride to Hadsar during non-Yatra season. Private taxi will cost you around more than 350/400 INR.

  • In most of the routes, Public transport (Buses) stops after 6:00 PM and start at 8:00 AM morning.

  • During Yatra season, there are special buses to Bharmour.

By Train:

Nearest Railway Station is Pathankot (Punjab). Pathankot has two railway stations – Pathankot Railway Station and Pathankot Cantt (Chakki Bank). Tourist can come to Pathankot and from here, can opt for bus services or cab services, available to reach  Bharmour. From Delhi you can take a train up to Pathankot. From Pathankot you can take a bus to Chamba and then follow the same route described above. From Pathankot, it is an estimated 7-8 hours drive to Bharmour via Chamba. Bharmour is the town nearest to Manimahesh where you can find proper accommodation for the night.

By Air:

Nearest airport is at Gaggal in Kangra, located at the distance of 240 KM from Bharmour but it takes same time to reach Bharmour from Dharamshala as it takes from Amritsar or Jammu. Its better to fly to Amritsar or Jammu if you are coming to Bharmour as roads are better. Flights are easily available from all the major cities of India.  Taxis are also easily available.


Where is the Manimahesh Kailash Trek

Manimahesh Lake (also known as Dal Lake, Manimahesh) is a high altitude lake (elevation 4,080 metres (13,390 ft)) situated close to the Manimahesh Kailash Peak in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas. It is also called Chamba Kailash. The peak is 5486m above sea level. The pilgrimage to Mani Mahesh is called "Man ka Mahesh" because it provides one with spiritual satisfaction after viewing Mount Kailash and taking a holy dip in the lake.The lake is a popular Hindu pilgrimage site that is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is believed that the mighty peak is the abode of the Hindu deity. The spiritual journey undertaken by thousands of pilgrims from different corners of the country commences on the auspicious day of Janmashtami and ends on Radha Asthami. After Mansarovar Lake in Tiber, the Mani Mahesh lake is the most sacred lake. During September and October, the lake attracts many pilgrims as this is the time when 'Manimahesh Yatra' commences.

Arrival at Pathankot/Chakki Bank/ Gaggal shall continue journey for Bharmour, Himachal Pradesh, Overnight stay at Bharmour. Next Morning board a helicopter flight from Bharmour to Gauri Kund and then leave for Darshan have holy dip and Darshan and then back to the Helicopter boarding point and fly back to Bharmour.
