Ajanta caves history

The Ajanta Caves in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state of India are about 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments which date from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 or 650 CE.  Buddhist caves Ajanta include paintings and rock cut sculptures described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art, particularly expressive painting that present emotion through gesture, pose and form. In the early 19th century (year 1819) some British soldiers were out hunting in the Deccan plateau. One of them suddenly saw, from a height, a horseshoe rock, his curiosity aroused by the entrance of a cave. The hunting party ventured across the ravine of the Waghur River. And they discovered several caves, against which bush, shrubs earth and stones had billed up. All the rock-cut caves had paintings on verandahs, inner walls and ceilings, these revealed some of the most beautiful masterpieces of world art. The temple is a multi-storeyed complex, designed similar to Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva. The temple features a two-storied gateway, which resembles a South Indian Gopura. This gateway leads to a U-shaped courtyard, which is bordered by columned galleries. Sculptures of deities adorn the galleries of this temple that was once connected to the central temple by flying bridges. The idol of the presiding deity of this temple, Lord Ganapathy, is a swayambhu(self created/manifested), which is formed of white sand. The idol placed in the sanctum sanctorum, made of copper, gets lit up by sunlight during the sunrise and sunset. Ganapatipule Beach:  A clean rocky beach with fine silvery white sand, the Ganapatipule beach, is also known for the lagoon it houses.  Ganapatipule Beach is situated at a distance of 28 km from Ratnagiri and is one of the most visited places of this city. This beach has been named after the Hindu deity Ganesha and houses an ancient temple under the same name.  Other attractions of this beach include delicious food stalls, beautiful views of sunset and unique white sand which is rarely found on Indian beaches.

Marleshwar Temple:  Marleshwar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple and is located on the outskirts of Ratnagiri. It is situated on an isolated hill and is thoroughly surrounded by a dense network of evergreen forest. Bibi Ka Maqbara is built out of marbles on an elevated square platform with four minarets at its corners. The museum houses rare collection of artifacts and articles of personal use from the times of the Mughal era.

Daualatabad fort: Daulatabad Fort (14 kilometer away from Aurangabad City), in Daulatabad, or 'the abode of wealth' is situated on an isolated conical hill from a 600 feet high mesa-like flat terrain. The fort area is surrounded by three concentric walls (fortifications) known as kots. The Daulatabad fort was one of the most powerful forts during the medieval period.
