Places to visit in Kathmandu and Pokhara
KHATHMANDU
Swayambhu Stup: It watches over the Valley from the top of a hillock on its western side just three kilometers west of the city center. The stupa is one of the holiest Buddhist sites in Nepal and its establishment is linked to the creation of the Kathmandu Valley out of a primordial lake. Swayambhu is also known as Samhengu and is listed as a World Heritage Site. It is also one of the oldest and glorious Buddhist shrines in the world which is said to be two thousand years. The four sides of the stupa is painted with the eyes of Lord Buddha and the temple is also known as the watchful eyes of Buddha. Entrance fee Rs. 50 (SAARC nationals Rs. 30).
Durbar Square: This complex of palaces, courtyards and temples like Hanumandhoka Palace, Kumari Ghar (Abode of the Living Goddess), Taleju temple, built between the 12th and 18th centuries, used to be the seat of the ancient Malla Kings of Kathmandu. An intriguing piece here is the 17h -century stone inscription set into the wall of the palace with writings in 15 languages. The Durbar Square, protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the social, religious and urban focal point of the city. Even to date, all the major state and social ceremonies, including the solemnization of coronations are performed in one of the courtyards in this complex. There are also museums inside the palace building. There is an entrance fee of Rs. 250 for foreign visitors. Your ticket to the Square entitles you to visit all the museums.
The Kathmandu Valley: This verdant valley was once a huge lake, legend dictates that in the middle of the lake was a brilliant flame emanating from a Lotus flower. People would come from miles around to wonder and worship the flame. A Chinese disciple Bodhisattva Manjushree, wishing to worship the flame more closely sliced a portion of the hills with his sword draining its waters and thus the fertile Kathmandu valley was created.
POKHARA
Devi's Fall: Locally known as Patale Chhango or Hell’s Fall, this fall has a string of other names including David or David’s Fall. Its source is the water from the Phewa Lake. Situated a kilometer away from Pokhara, the fall has some good places for pre-monsoon swimming, to its left and behind it .
Deep Gorges : The Seti river flowing across Pokhara has created many gorges, most important among them being the Seti gorge. The mesmerizing vistas of these deep and narrow gorges can be best viewed from the Mahendra Pool.
Annapurna Regional Museum: Situated on the campus of the Prithvi Narayan University east of the bazaar, the Annapurna Regional Museum is a natural history museum devoted to the Annapurna region and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project. Among its highlights is an unusually comprehensive butterfly collection.
Lake Begnas (Lake Rupa): Lakes Begnas and Rupa are located 15 km (91/4 mi.) or so east of Pokhara. They are smaller and less well known than Lake Phewa and little frequented. Lake Begnas lies close to the village of Sisuwa where boats can be rented. The Sundari Danda, a vantage point about an hour's walk from Sisuwa, offers lovely views of the lakes with a breathtaking mountain-scape behind. On the east side is the 'Begnas Lake Resort'.
Gupteswar Cave: Gupteswar cave, a sacred cave, lies 2 km from Pokhara airport on the Siddhartha Highway leading southwest from the city. The entrance is right across from Devi's Fall and the cave is almost 3 km long. It has some big hall-size rooms and some passages where you have to crawl on all fours. This cave holds special value for Hindus since a phallic symbol of Lord Shiva is preserved here in the condition it was discovered. An entrance fee of Rs. 5 is charged and taking pictures inside the cave is prohibited.
Trekking at Annapurna Circuit
A bit of knowledge can go a long way when it comes to choosing the best time to visit Nepal and hiking the Annapurna Circuit. While getting to the start of the Circuit doesn’t require a stomach-churning and weather-dependent flight like it does to get to start the Everest Base Camp trek, heavy snow can close off the Thorong La Pass cutting off your access to the other half of the circuit. The dry season starts in October/November, making it one of the best time of year to do the trek amidst the landscapes that’s lush and green from the recent monsoons. Visibility is clear and you can get amazing views of the Himalayas throughout the hike. December and January offers similar visibility but a drop in temperature that can make the trek very cold or even closed at the pass. February to April reopens the window for a more comfortable trek before the monsoon and heat hits in May. It’s best to avoid the trek from June through early September where the humidity and monsoon arrives in full force. The trails are wet and muddy and waterfalls and floods can partially block the trails and roads to and on the Annapurna Circuit. Choose wisely.
Nightlife in Kathmandu
For the nightlife in Kathmandu you have to be in Thamel. Here you can find lots of restaurants, cocktail bars, live music and relaxing bars. Nightlife starts early (around 10 o’clock) and also ends early (around 1 o’clock) so make sure that you are on time. If you want a cheap beer, order the local Gorkha Beer. It taste good and is much cheaper than the popular touristic brands. Do you want something different? Kathmandu also have cinema's called the QFX Jai Nepal, QFX Central, QFX Kumari Cinema and Big Cinema where they play some English movies. While gambling is illegal in Nepal for inhabitants, there are some casino's for tourists in Kathmandu. These are the Casino Nepal, Anna, Everest, Royale and Rad and are all located in the 5 stars hotels. However, local people love to gamble and do it secretly during holidays and festivals. Most popular game is playing cards which you will definitely do during one of the experiences at With locals!
Clubs in Kathmandu
Galaxy Discotheque
Set inside the Everest Hotel, this loud and lively nightspot is Kathmandu’s most popular disco. This is where the young, hip and successful in Kathmandu like to spend their time, and the dress code is as smart as the clientele.
J Bar
At the back of the trendy Himalayan Java coffeeshop, J Bar caters to a trendy crowd of locals, expats, and well-heeled trekkers. Looking more Manhattan than downtown Kathmandu, the bar has an extensive cocktail menu and chill-out sounds on the system.
Shopping in Kathmandu, Nepal
There is some pretty cool stuff to be found in Kathmandu, varying from big shopping malls offering the latest high-end fashion, to original products in local shops or cheaper tourist souvenirs in street stalls. The shopping special of Kathmandu are the beautiful Pashmina and cashmere shawls. They are made of the Himalayan Lambs and are very soft. You can even buy these shawls for prices between Rs.200 and Rs.500, if you are a good bargainer!
