Tanjore
Sri Brihadisvara Temple
Built by the great Chola king, Raja Raja I in the 10th century AD, this temple is an outstanding example of the Chola architecture. Guarding the inner shrine of the temple, is the gigantic statue of Nandi, the Bull, while the walls of the sanctum are covered, with the wall paintings of Chola and Nayak periods, comparable to the famous Ajanta cave frescoes.
Tanjavur Palace
The Palace, adjacent to the temple is a vast structure of fine masonry, built partly by the Nayaks around 1550 AD, and partly by the Marathas.
Saraswathi Mahal Library
This library has one of the most important oriental manuscripts collections, in India. Established around 1700 AD, the library contains a collection of over 44,000 palm leaf, and paper manuscripts in Indian and European languages. Over eighty per cent of its manuscripts are in Sanskrit, many on palm leaves, some very rare or even unique. The Tamil works includes treatises on medicine, and commentaries on works from the Sangam period.
Tamil University
Established in 1981, the university is engaged in research and advanced study in Tamil.
Art Gallery
A superb collection of bronze statues from the 9th to 12th centuries.
Madurai
Meenakshi Temple
The Meenakshi temple is the city's main attraction and is placed in the heart of the old town. Temple gives a splendid example of Dravidian architecture and is famous for Jasmine Flowers. The present temple was designed in 1560 by Vishwanatha Nayak and subsequently built during the reign of Tirumalai Nayak. There are four entrances to the temple with an area of six hectares. Each of its 12 towers has the height of 45 to 50 meters. The temple museum has 985 richly carved pillars and each one surpasses the other in beauty. The enormous temple complex is dedicated to Shiva, known here as Sundareshvara and his consort Parvati or Meenakshi. The original temple was built by Kulasekara Pandya, but the entire credit for making the temple as splendid as it is today goes to the Nayaks. The Nayaks ruled Madurai from the 16th to the 18th century and left a majestic imprint of their rule in the Meenakshi - Sundareswarar Temple. The temple complex is within a high-walled enclosure, at the core of which are the two sanctums for meenakshi and Sundareshwara, surrounded by a number of smaller shrines and grand pillared halls. Especially impressive are the 12 gopuras. Their soaring towers rise from solid granite bases, and are covered with stucco figures of dieties, mythical animals and monsters painted in vivid colours.
Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal
The most imposing remnant is a huge audience hall opening into a courtyard with elaborately ornamented arches.
Gandhi Museum
This institution is a 300 year old palace dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi to promote study and appreciation of the Mahatma's teachings. There is a picture gallery, personal memorables of the Mahatma and an exhibit of South indian handicrafts and village industries
Vandiyur Mariamman Theppakulam
This enormous temple tank 5 kms from Meenakshi temple is fed by water from the Vaiga river. The tank has a mandapam at the centre enshrining Lord Vigneshwara.
Trichy
Rock Fort Temple
As the name suggests, the Rock Fort Temple is situated on 83m high outcrops. The Pallavas initially built this temple, but the Nayaks made use of its naturally fortified position and designed it again. It is a stiff climb, up the 437 steps cut into the stone to the top. The Rock Fort Temple complex in Tiruchirappalli is a collection of three temples, the Manikka Vinayakar temple at the foot of the hill, the Uchhi Pillayar Koyil at the top of the hill and the Taayumaanavar Koyil Shivastalam on the hill. Shivastalam is a rock cut temple on a hill and the most prominent landmark in Tiruchirappalli, reached by a flight of steps on the way to the famous Ucchi Pillayar temple. There is a rock cut Pallava temple called Lalitankura Pallaveswaram in this hill temple complex, with several inscriptions here attributed to Mahendravarma Pallavan. In addition the Cholas, the Vijayanagar rulers and the Nayaks of Madurai have made extensive contributions here. The two storeyed Taayumaanava temples, built on a hill is a masterpiece of construction. Six worship services are offered each day here. This well endowed temple celebrates the annual Brahmotsavam in Chithirai. Aadi Pooram and the float festival in Panguni are also of significance here. Built by the Nayaks of Madurai, it holds two temples dedicated to Shiva and Ganesha. This rock also contains excavated cave temples dating to the 7th century A.D, famous for the fine sculptures.
Sri Rangam
Sri Rangam, 10km. from Trichy, known for its Vaishnavite temple dedicated to Lord Ranganathaswamy. The temple has 21 magnificient towers surrounded by seven walls which were built around the 13th and 14th centuries.
Tiruvanaikkavil
