Lohagarh is a majestic fort at a height of 1050 meters near Lonavala. Lohagad, means Iron fort. Lohagad was an important hill fort used extensively by Chatrapati Shivaji.  It has a long history and was used by all dynasties who ruled Vidharbha and Maratha kingdoms. There are 4 doors to Lohagad from the nearby village – Lohgadwadi, ‘Ganesh Darwaja’ , ‘Narayan Darwaja’ , ‘Hanuman Darwaja’ and ‘Maha Darwaja’. Some sculptures can also be seen on Maha Darwaja. Lohagad is not so spreaded and can be easily seen in few hours. A very beautiful view of “Pawana Dam”  is also visible from the Lohagad. The ‘loot’ from Surat was brought here under the leadership of Netaji Palkar and kept here for some period. The fort has been declared as a protected monument by the government. Lohgad and Visapur are connected to each other.

Why you must visit Lohagadh Fort

Lohagad fort, also known as the iron fort, is the main attraction in Lohagad. From Satavahnas to Mughals to Marathas, the hill fort was occupied by several dynasties at different time periods. Lohagad fort’s four large gates are still intact and in good condition, but the main attraction is the fortified spur, called Vinchukata. Fort offers you a scenic view and panaromic greenery and it takes you towards adventure activity and lifelong happiness with you.

Trekking at Lohagadh fort

This is a multi access fort. You can drive till the base village or walk. One can also do a night trek to Lohagad, as in the name of development roads are now built from Lonavala railway station till the base village. Lohagad trek is one of the easiest treks ideal for beginners and the trek route to Lohagad is more of an easy hike that involves no climbing with stairs at the end of the trail leading to the fort.  One can also continue the Lohagad trek to Pavananagar and visit the Pavana dam and lake.

The trek route to Lohagad is pretty much straight forward. Bhaje village is where one could start the trek to Lohagad fort. Bhaje is about 6 kms from Malawli. A liesurely walk of about 1.5 hrs. A right turn from here will take you to Logaon which is at the foot of the fort where the stairs up the fort starts. A left turn at Gaimukh Khind will lead you to the Visaprur fort.

Camping at Lohagadh fort

No there is no option to camping at lohagadh fort because it do not occupy caves or space to provide camp facility at Lohagadh fort. There is nearest Malavan village which provides camp facility to tourist from where you enjoy camp activity and camp side adventurous chances.

Lohagadh fort is basically known as for trekking and enjoy adventure activities at Lohagadh fort. A beautiful fort in a beautiful location, good roads to the base and an easy climb make Lohagad fort one of the more popular destinations to visit close to Pune. The fort is still in a good condition and relatively cleans. Many of the structures on the fort are still intact and climbing the fort would give you the feeling of actually climbing a fort.  The four large gates of Lohagad are still in good condition and reasonably intact.

Ekvira Temple:  In Hinduism Goddess Ekvira also worshipped as Renuka in different parts of India and Nepal is mother of Chiranjivi or immortal sage Parashurama. This is very old hindu temple.  This temple is situated near to famous Karla Caves. This temple is of Goddess Shree Aai Ekveera mother of ‘Shree ParashuRam’. This is a temple of the Koli (fishermen) community  in Lonavala, is located outside the main chaitya of Karla cave

Karla and Bhaja Caves: These rock cut caves date back to 2nd century and located 16 km away from Khandala. They are popular for antiquity and beauty.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival at Pune and proceed to Lonavala (65 km/ 1 Hours)

After arrival at Pune airport or railway station you will proceed to Lonavala which is 65 km away from Pune. After reach lonavala you will taken towards Malvani village which is 7 km away from city center of Lonavala. After reach Malvani village check in to camp and they will welcomes you & served lunch. After lunch you may have time to spend in camp by performing various activities in Village like Riding, Pitch in tent and trek guide will explain you all detail about trekking and how careful be during trek. In the evening enjoy born fire and play some games with camp mate and overnight stay with dinner at Camp

Day 02: Full day trek at Lohagadh fort

After breakfast start your trek towards Lohagadh fort which is located close to the hill station Lonavala and 52 km northwest of Pune. Lohagad rises to an elevation of 1,033 m (3,389 ft) above sea level. The fort is connected to the neighboring Visapur fort by a small range. Lohagadh fort is 2 – 3 km away from Base village and it takes 2:30 Hours to reach at the fort.

After reach have some minute’s of rest, after that enjoy the scenic view of natural beauty and awareness. Large Gates on the forts, Wall of the fort which are still intact, enjoy your full day at fort by visiting all the famous spot later you will move towards Bhaja caves and you may have packed lunch. At nearby 4 'o clock return towards base camp and overnight stay with dinner at Camp

About Lohagadh Fort

Lohagad is one of the many hill forts of Maharashtra state in India. Situated close to the hill station Lonavala and 52 km northwest of Pune, Lohagad rises to an elevation of 1,033 m (3,389 ft) above sea level. The fort is connected to the neighboring Visapur fort by a small range.  Narayan Darwaja, Hanuman Darwaja and Maha Darwaja are the four doors to Lohagad from the nearby village. A few sculptures are still visible on Maha Darwaja. Visapur fort, which is 3,500 feet in height, is situated between Lohagad and Bedse Caves. Huge cannon of 10 feet in length feet are the main attraction of Visapur, as it has an impression of royal crown.
