Chamunda Devi Temple or Nandi Keshwar Dham contructed 700 years ago is a very ancient shrine located on the banks of Baner River, situated 18 km west of Palampur, in District Kangra of Himachal Pradesh, India.
The Chamunda Devi Temple is a shrine to the wrathful form of Goddess Durga or Chamunda who in Hindu Mythology is the symbol of female power.Chamunda is also closely associated with Kali, another fierce aspect of Devi. She is sometimes identified with goddesses Parvati &Chandi as well.The name Chamunda is a combination of Chanda and Munda, two monsters which Devi killed. The goddess is often portrayed as haunting cremation grounds or fig trees. Originally a tribal goddess, Chamunda was assimilated in Hinduism and later entered the Jain pantheon too.
Darshan of the Sacred Idol Of Chamuda Devi
The idol of Goddess Chamunda in the temple is considered so sacred that it is completely hidden beneath a red cloth and is kept so always. The images of Hanuman and Bhairo are found on either sides of the main deity. Apart from the holy deity of Chamunda covered in the red cloth, the temple also contains a pool in its complex. A dip in this pool is considered sacred. The back of the temple contains a cave like place where is placed a stone lingam, considered to be an embodiment of Lord Shiva. Chamunda Devi Temple also contains paintings and sculptures depicting scenes from the holy books of Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Devotees come here to offer prayers, worship and give offerings for their ancestors. It is thought to be sacred to take a dip in Bang Ganga River and to read and recite the writings of Shat Chandi. In the old days, people used to offer sacrifices also to the deity.
