Places to visi in Thekkady
Thekkady is one of the major destinations of the state of Kerala, the God’s own country. Due to its unmatched natural beauty and serenity, this small town is visited by a large number of tourists every year. The town also houses one of world’s most fascinating natural wildlife sanctuaries. Thekkady is also the major base point to access some of the other exotic sites in Kerala as well as in Tamil Nadu. A visit to Thekkady also provides you the opportunity to see wildlife at close ranges, besides the varied vegetation and a wide variety of birds. Lying at an altitude of 700-1900 m above sea level, Thekkady has a cool and comfortable climate. Out here, you can also go for treks and mountain walks.
PERIYAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY - Located by the river Periyar, this is the main attraction of Thekkady. Spread over 777 sq km, this sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. The flora includes over 1965 flowering plants, 171 species of grass, 143 orchid species and the South Indian conifer, Podocarpus Wallichianus. Apart from tigers, the fauna includes wild elephant, gaur, wild boar, Nilgir Tahr, lion tailed macaque, bonnet macaque, sambar deer, Malabar giant squirrel, flying squirrel, tiger, jungle cat, hornbill, stork, woodpecker, kingfisher, sloth bear, raptor, cormorant, grackle, darter, viper, krait, monitor lizards, frogs, toads, cobra, masheer and otter.
LAKE - This exotic artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River also has a wonderful palace situated in its center. The greatest attraction of the Periyar Lake though, is the herd of wild elephants that come down to play here. One can have the unique experience of viewing wildlife from close quarters within a boat on the lake.
WATCH TOWER - The Watch Tower makes yet another important tourist spot within the park with a wonderful view of the surrounding areas from here. The tower is maintained by the Forest Department and overlooks water holes in the buffer zone. It is advisable to wear proper boots and outfits to avoid scars and insect bites.
KOTTAYAM: Kottayam lies between the palm-fringed backwaters on the west and the wild Western Ghats to its east. It is characterised by picturesque backwaters couples with the lush countryside brimming with rubber, tea, coffee, teak, cardamom and pepper plantations. Besides there are churches and houses built in the colonial style and many important religious places. Kottayam is the first fully literate town of India. It is also the home of Kerala’s publishing industry. Kottayam houses some revered temples of south India like Thirunakkara Mahadevar Shiva Temple, Valiapalli and the Cheriapalli. Moreover, it also has the famous Thazhathangadi Mosque and the wonderful Good Shepherd Church that add to its beauty and importance.
KUMARAKOM: Located about 128 km from Thekkady, Kumarakom is a must visit. The main attractions here include the Kumarakom bird sanctuary with a large variety of migratory birds. Sailing in the furnished boathouses here is an exquisite experience. Kumarakom is also famous for old churches and the popular form of ayurveda treatment.
KUMILY A: plantation town easily accessible from Thekkady, this is located just on the brim of the Periyar wildlife Sanctuary. Apart from being an important tourist destination, Kumily is also an important centre for spice trade.
MADURAI : Also called the temple city of India, it is one of the most visited religious destinations in southern India on the rocky banks of the river Vaigai..Madurai is also a modern industrial city of the state. Having been the political capital of the Pandyan and the Nayakan dynasties, Madurai was the centre of learning South Indian culture and tradition for the past 2,500 years. The magnificent gopurams of the Meenakshi Temple are the main attraction of the city. Apart from this, the Mariamman Teppakulam, Tirumalai Nayak Mahal, Thirupparankunram, Azhagar Koil, Gandhi Museum and Koodal Alagar Temple are other important sites to visit in Madurai.
MANGLA DEVI TEMPLE: Just about 15 km from Thekkady, lies Mangla Devi at an elevation of 1337 m above sea level. This temple is built in the traditional Kerala style of architecture and is an important Hindu pilgrimage site. From here you can have a panoramic view of the slopes of both the eastern and western ghats and of some hill villages of Tamil Nadu.
Tribal Heritage Museum- Tribal Communities living here in Periyar organizes a tribal Heritage Programme as a part of which you will be taken by on of the tribal guide to a tribal hamlet and Tribal Heritage Museum where traditional fishing gears, hunting tools and medicanal plants are kept on display. Entry fees for this is 100 Rs.

Day 2 Munnar

Also visit Eco point and tea plantations. After noon you can visit Eravikulam National park; where the endangering Nilgiri Tahr is conserved. Later drive back to your resort for Overnight stay.
Day 3 Munnar-Thekkady(110kms/3hrs)
Today after breakfast check out your hotel and drive towards Thekkady, the Wildlife destination of Kerala. Its also known as the spice bag of the state. You can enjoy a beautiful journey through the hills and valleys of Western Ghats to reach this jungle destination. Check in your hotel and later go for an optional Kathakali show, Spice plantation visit, elephant ride, or an Ayurvedic massage treatment there. Also have an amazing boat ride in Periyar Lake which flows through the Periyar tiger reserve. You will have chance to watch the wild animals like elephant, Bison, Sambar, Deer etc are roaming the both shore. Overnight stay.
Day 4 Thekkady-Cochin Drop off Today after breakfast check out the resort and drive back to Cochin for a city tour and later drop off at Airport/Railwaystation.
