Meghalaya is dominated by three principal groups of people. The Garo in the east and west Garo hills, the Khasi-Pnar in the east and west Khasi hills and the Jaintia hills. They follow primarily a matrilineal system. The Khasi group belongs to the Mon-Khemar sub-family of the Austro group of people. Song, dance and rhythm permeate the souls of the people of Meghalaya. They are people who live their lives to the rhythm of nature and the beat of tribal drums. Meghalaya is rich in culture and traditions and is a home to many famous music and dances forms. Dances are associated with their festivals or seasons and hence are to be enjoyed throughout the year. There are various cultural tours organized during the dance festivals.
