Botanical Gardens: There are two botanical gardens in Chandigarh.First garden islocated in the Punjab University and another between the Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake in Sector 1. The botanical garden in Punjab University has distinctive varieties of plants such as cacti, succulent plant,several evergreen exotic plants & lotus etc.
The second botanical garden near Rock garden and Sukhna Lake is spread on an area of 88 acres. The best part about this garden are the rare species of plants and small lily pools.
Bougainville Garden spread over an area of 20 acres is located in Sector-3,Chanidgarh. The natural choe running through the valley starts from here. The garden is devoted to hundreds of varieties of bougainvillea. A few flowering trees have also been planted to give colourful effect during the intervening period of bougainvillea flowering time. It was opened in 1976.
Garden of Fragrance, located in Sector-36,Chandigarh is famous for its distinctive aromatic and fragrant plants. Some of the fragrant plants that can be found here are Raat ki rani, demask roase, motia, Champa, Haar Shingar, mehndi and varieties of jasmine. Chandigarh garden of fragrance also serves as a fabulous picnic spot. Tracks have been laid in the garden and now people come here in the morning and evening time to carry out their physical workouts.
Terraced Flower Garden located in Sector-33,Chandigarh is known for its terraced flower garden which is meant for the walkers. The garden attracts you towards its illuminated musical fountain. The garden hosts the annual Chrysanthemum Show and is spread to an area of 10 acres which was created in 1979. Chandigarh terraced flower garden contains exquisite varieties of flowering plants. The atmosphere over here is very tranquil and people frequently visit this garden in the evenings to enjoy the cool breeze and to feast their eyes with the surrounding beauty.
Rose Garden is also known as Zakir Rose Garden is Asia's largest rose garden. It is located in Sector 16.Rose garden is spread over 30 acres with 50,000 rose-trees of 1600 species. It was named after India's former President, Zakir Hussain. Alongwith the roses emphasis was also given on the trees of medicinal value and some unique specimen trees. Fountains and bright lights enhance its beauty at night and provide a breath of fresh air to all who come to enjoy a walk and unwind. This garden is the venue of the annual Festival of Gardens (Rose Festival).
Pinjore Gardens is also known as the Yadavindra Gardens. They are located about 20 km from Chandigarh at Pinjore. Pinjore Garden was designed by Fidai Khan, who was a cousin to Aurangzeb. This garden of Chandigarh is a popular picnic spot with historical importance. The garden is spread over an area of 100 acres along the sloping site with fountains and pavilions. A mini zoo, plants nursery, Japanese garden, historic palaces, picnic lawns and Guest house offer great options for leisure to the travelers. During the weekends, fountains are switched on and lights elevate the beauty of historical palaces at dusk.
Cactus Garden renamed as National Cactus and Succulent Botanical Garden and Research Centre is situated in the heart of the city Panchkula, Satellite town of Chandigarh City.Spread over an area of 7 Acres it is considered as Asia's largest outdoor landscaped cacti and Succulents Garden with over 2500 species of Cacti & succulents. The garden has comprehensive collection of Indian succulents, the largest in the world, some of them extremely rare and have already been declared as endangered species, which includes complete collection of Genus Caralluma of Indian origin. The garden has three green houses. The cacti and succulents also have medical values. Indian succulents are being used in Ayurveda and Unani medicines for centuries. It is a great source of attraction for not only only tourists but also for botanists.
Smriti Upavana is located in Sector-1,Chandigarh.Smriti means "remembrance" and Upavan means "forest". This is a forest where every tree commemorates someone who is no more. This is basically a space which has been set aside to allow the people to plant trees in memory of the deceased. The resultant forest is intended to be a place of silence and remembrance. It was formally inaugurated on 14 November, 1988 (Children's Day)in the memory of the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru.
