Sattalis is unique for its biodiversity and ecological amplitude situated in the Lower Himalayan Range and is the result of tectonic activities and the uplifting of sediments between the Tibetan plain and the Indo-Gangetic plains. It has 500 species of resident and migratory birds, 20 species of mammals, over 525 species of butterflies and over 11,000 species of moths, beetles, bugs and other insects. Sattal has many different varieties of fish like Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala, Schizothorax richardsonii and Catla catla are some of the other fish found in the lakes. Mahseers are found here in large numbers.

Best time to Visit
Bhimtal is an year round destination and offer some reason to visit any in any season it witness.
March to June - For those who are looking for mild weather and want to get away from city heat.
July and August - If you wish to enjoy the monsoon then visit at this time when apart from rains you shall also witness clouds floating beside you, no doubt it’s a scene you would like to capture for your life and urge to come back again.
September to November - If you are nature lover and wishes to witness lush green environs then you must visit during these months when Kumaon region and Bhimtal comes under beauty of its own with green all around and a very pleasant weather.
December to February - For winter enthusiasts these months are when temperatures dip to their lowest. Though Bhimtal does not witness snow fall but there are plenty of places within 2-3 hrs driving distance where one can find snow on the hills.
Places to See in Bhimtal
Garg Parvat: It is the source of river Gargi, also known as Gola Nadi in the region.
Nal Damyanti Tal: About 2 km from Bhimtal is Nal Damyanti Tal, a small natural lake. It is believed that the palace of famous king Nala drowned into this lake. It is a very sacred place for the dwellers of the region.
Hidimba Parvat: About 5 km from Bhimtal is a hill known as Hidimba Parvat. It gets its name from demon Hidimba of Mahabharata. Vankhandi Maharaj, a monk and environmentalist lives on the hill now, and has created a sanctuary for the wild animals around the hill. The area is known as Vankhandi Ashram.
