For those who want to avoid the long road journey, they have options of getting down at Kumily station which is just 6kms away from Thekkady. However the limitation is that, there are limited numbers of trains to Kumily from Ahmedsbad, Vadodra or Surat.

As per the train timings, by the time guests arrive at Thekkady , it will be evening in most of the cases. After checking into the hotel and refreshing, the guests can watch theKalaripayattu (Martial arts of Kerala), show which starts at 6.00 pm till 9.00 pm. Each show is of approx 45 minutes with a background commentary. Experts perform daredevil stunts, captivating you totally!! After this, there is a musical fountainshow nearby. This is for about   30 minutes.

Day 2: Visit to the major sites:

The second day, most of the important sites at Thekkadyis covered. Morning can start with the main attraction - Periyaar Boat ride. This starts from 7.00 pm onwards. There is a heavy rush   for tickets. It is better to arrive early. The boat ride is for duration of 90 minutes and is the most exciting part of the Thekkady Trip. Wildlife of the forest can be spotted from the boat.    After the boat ride is over then take a break and have a hearty buffet breakfast at your hotel. No Kerala Trip is complete without tasting its delicious dishes like – Puttu, Iddiyappam, Vellyaappam.

The second all family trip can be the Jeep Ride which is quite unforgettable. Hire a jeep for the entire family. Ideal family count would be six, to sit comfortably. For a fixed amount, the jeep will cover almost a 60 to 75 kilometer drive, across some of Thekkady’s most lovely places. It starts with 2 to 3 hill tops that gives an exquisitely lovely view of Iddukkitown. Some mythological temples like the Kannagi temple can also be viewed from one of the hill tops. The jeep ride then covers, the finer aspects of the MullaperiyarDam, including viewing of the flow systems and also the miniature model of the dam along with its architecture.  After the Dam coverage, the jeep ride will take you for viewing of lush green vegetable farms on the Kerala – Tamil Nadu border. For city dwellers, this would be truly interesting. The last part of the trip is the sprawling vineyards, in which the entire system of grape cultivation is shown and explained.  Lunch can be had at Thekkady town center where all types of restaurants are available.

Once the jeep returns to the Thekkady tourist center starting point, you can take a break and plan for your next trip i.e. the Elephant ride. This 45 minute ride will take you in some selected spots of the arena. Two people can climb on a single elephant. A trained mahout will be with you throughout the 45 minute joy ride.

Thekkady is famous for its tribal culture and songs and their assimilation into modern day society. Wind up the days tiring events by buying tickets for a tribal dance show which starts from 6.00 pm onwards. Each show is about 45 minutes.

Day 3: Visit to the Tea and Spice Plantations –

There is also a nature walk trip, which can be undertaken in the early morning especially for members of the family who are health freaks. These tea plantations produce famous brands like- AVT, Tata tea, Harrison Malayalam etc. You can also shop for premium grade Tea in specialized shops.

After tea, then cover the spice plantations. Kerala is known for its Cardamom, Pepper and Vanilla.  Also see how to make natural rubber from latex oozing out of rubber trees. In the second half, shop to your heart’s content for organic fresh garden spices. You will find a lot of them at reasonable prices. End the day with a good dinner at a restaurant of your choice. Lot of budget restaurants serve variety of cusines ranging from – Tandoor to Chinese to continental to Kashmiri and GujarthiThalis also. Local delicacies are available at most of the restaurants.
