Further from Kalka, ride on 96 km the historic UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla toy train to Shimla, It provides one of the most scenic train journeys in India thrilling you, while it gradually winds its way steeply upwards along the narrow track, though lower lush green himalayan mountains and pine-Devdar forests.

The Incredible Journey includes 20 railway stations, 102 tunnels, 800 bridges, and an incredible 900 curves. The longest tunnel, which stretches for more than a kilometer, is near the main railway station at Barog.

The most spectacular scenery occurs from Barog to Shimla.

  • Shivalik Deluxe Express -- a premium express train with carpet, wide glass windows that open, cushioned seats, and relaxing music. It fits 120 passengers. Food is provided. There are no stops along the way.

Shimla to Narkanda is 60 kms at the altitude of 2708 meters, You can have tea break at Narkanda, Keep descending and driving till Rampur which is further 60 kms away at altitude of 1005 meters. Rampur is home to Raja Virbhadra and Family, who have ruled over Himachal the most and famous for the Inernational Lavi fair.

Further Moving from Rampur Bushahar, you start gaining altitude and Reach Sarahan after tarvelling about 40 kms and you also gain altitude upto 2165 meters. sarahan is famous for Bhimakali temple and apple orchards.

After spending 15 minutes break in Sarahan, we move to Sangla located at 95 kms from Sarahan at altitude of 2680 meters.Sangla is a Picturesque town on the bank of Baspa River

Night Stay in Sangla Valley in Banjara camps.

After breakfast in Camp in Sanga, we proceed for Chitkul Via Rakcham. Chitkul is the most beautiful place in the globe, with gushing Rivulets, Lots of virgin beauty, Chitkul is also the last village on the Indo - Tibet Border.

Spend some time in Sangla Roaming about & Visit Kamaru Fort. In the after noon, proceed to Chitkul via Rakcham. Chitkul is the Last inhibited village of India on Indo-Tibet Border.Road is not in a condition from Karchham Dam onwards. Reach Chitkul by the late afternoon, Enjoy your walks here and enjoy the nature fully

In the Night, you have two options, Either to Stay in Chitkul or proceed back to Sangla camp.

We proceed from Chitkul to Kaza, the first Destination is Recongpeo at 65 kms, Recongpeo is the District Head-quarter of Kinnaur Valley, Tourists Stop here to get permit to Shipki-La, Further moving we proceed to Kalpa at further 13 kms at height of 2900 meters, In Kalpa we van have a tea break in the main market.

 

Kinner Kailash Darshan in Kalpa - 

While you cross Kalpa, have a look out to see the Holy Shivlinga of  Kinnaur kailash, some times because of the fog it is not easily visible, but if you are blessed, the 69 ft height shiv ling becomes visible from that distance not more than 1 inch.

After tea Break, we drive to Puh, which is at 77 kms from Kalpa at height of 2837 meters, further 11 kms is Village of Khab at altitude of 2831 meters, Keep enjoying the panoramic route. Khab is famous for Shipki-La (5669 m) approx 30 km detour from Khab. At Shipki-la, Satluj enters to India from Tibet.

 

Nako and Tabo UNESCO World Heritage Buddhist Monastery Tour

Further moving from Khab, we reach Nako, which is further 31 kms away. Nako is located at altitude of 3800 meters and famous for Buddhist monastery and Nako Lake, We reach Nako usually by Lunch, Have a lunch in Nako and Proceed further. .From Nako Road winds to Yangthang at 7 kms altitude of 3663 meters, Chango at 13 kms. At Chango enjoy and get surprised by Apple Orchards and Unique irrigation system for watering the crops.Further driving to Samdo at 26 kms from Chango. Samdo is famous for Sugar Point/Lepcha (Tibet Border).

Further proceed to Hoorling at 9 kms from Samdo, Before Hoorling, Gue village falls,Gue is known for the mummy of a Lama which is thousands of years old. 

Finally we reach Tabo located at 24 kms from Hoorling at altitude at 3050 meters, Tabo is Famous for a thousand year old monastery which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site


From Tabo, we proceed to Poh located at 10 kms at altitude of 3150 meters, Further 1 km is Atargo, from Atargo is the diversion for Dhankar, which is only 7 kms, Dhankar is very famous for monastery and Dhankar lake.

Finally we are getting close to Kaza, The Head-quarter of Spiti Valley. which is only left 23 kms at an altitude of 3600 meters
Reach Kaza in the night, Night Stay in Kaza Hotel

Wake up fresh in the morning and proceed to Dhankar Monastery, It’s a lovely monastery at a height of 12774 ft. Spend half an hour in the monastery, From the back of this monastery from where one gets the best view of the valley.

From Dhankar Monastery it took another hour or so to reach Kaza via the Kaza bridge & Visit Kaza Monastery. Have your lunch and proceed for Kibber around 14 KM from Kaza and then Key Monastery, so first visit Kibber, then visit Key monastery.

Kibber is almost at a height of around 14500 ft and a very beautiful village with lovely people, greenery, farms. These small small places are fully developed, with lovely houses, and government schools which implies full education. Approximate population of this village is around 300.

Also visit Langza at 20 kms from Kaza (4400 m), Enjoy the Hamlet settled in lovely backdrop, Spend half an hour in Langza and Proceed to Komic Village at 7 kms further at altitude of 4513 meters. Komic enjoys its status as Highest Village of Asia.

Enjoy some time in Komic Village and proceed further to see the world Famous Key Monastery at 7 kms further & altitude of 4116 meters.

Night Stay in Kaza & Return to shimla if road conditions not good.


Now we proceed onwards for the dream drive to Manali thrugh Kunzum Pass (4551 meters) & Rohtang pass(3938 meters). The road is motorable during Summers till Kunzum pass is open.Drive is also the the most beautiful and most adventurous one.After Kaza, there is a diversion to Rohtang pass from Rangrik/Key Monastery junction & our destination is Losar around 58 KM from Kaza, which is a Lovely small village, After Losar, there are numerous tiny small places like Rangrik, Spurik, Hal, Pogmo, Hansa and many little places with meagre population. Around 15-20 minutes break in Losar and then on towards Kunzum Pass

The view gets more and more better towards Kunzum pas. The Kunzum pass at a height of around 15060 ft, with snow top peaks and a Buddhist temple.


Next to Kunzum Pass, next destination is Batal, where we can have lunch break at a enjoying the Lovely view on the banks of the Chandra river.

After half an hour lunch break at Battal, Proceed and after about 1.5 hours drive reach Chatru, which is Another nice small village with a couple of Dhaba for tea and snacks. Had a cup of tea and went in for a lovely walk around the town. Chattru at a height of around 13000 ft, Just 32 KM from Rohtang Pass,Next Destination is Gramphu , lots of small as well as big waterfalls welcome you.Once Gramphu is crossed, then starts the steep rise to Rohtang Pass. 

As You approach Rohtang Pass, greenery starts to appear and the dryness starts to disappear. Lovely view of small waterfalls in distant mountains on the opposite side, makes the journey lovely.
 
A very important thing about Rohtang pass is while on one side one can see the entire Spiti and the entire Lahaul valley, on the other side, the western part of Himachal including Manali, Kullu.Because of the the construction of Rohtang tunnel by BRO, once you reach up the Rohtang, numerous blockages and full mudd filled road.

Cross Rohtang pass and have a tea break as it will take approx 45 minutes to Manali. 

Night Stay in Manali Hotel & Take Full Rest after Dinner

 

Note:

  • Rohtang pass is 51 Kms | 2hrs one way. It is not accessible for almost eight months in a year as it is covered by snow. We generally visit the snow point on Rohtang Road subject to weather conditions.
  • Solang Valley: All the adventure sports at Solang Valley are on direct payment basis & subject to weather conditions.

Other Major Attractions

Dhankar Monastery: This Monastery is situated on a cliff between Kaza and Tabo. An amazing view of the Spiti river can be seen from here. This Monastery has a statue of 'Vairocharan' displaying four statues of Buddha seated in the 4 directions, along with ancient paintings, murals and texts. A true insight into Buddhist religion and culture can be procured by a visit to this Monastery.

Dhankar lake: At a distance of 5 km from the Dhankar monastery that sits dangerously on a cliff, lies the Dhankar lake on the other side of the mountain. It takes about an hour to reach the lake after following a well marked trail from the monastery. If you spend enough time at the lake, you can see the sky change colors and reflect on the crystal-like lake.

Pin valley National Park: The another Famous place in Spiti valley is Pin valley National Park. Pin Valley National Park is home for more than 20 species of animals and birds, including the endangered Snow leopard. Pin River flows through the base of the valley. The park is also popular with trekkers who come to see the natural beauty and the wildlife of the park.

Nichar: People come here to embrace mother nature because of its rich green and thick forest and the softness in its weather conditions but be cautious as you proceed to the higher and colder region which is a natural habitat of black and red bears.

Ribba: Ribba also known as 'rirang' gets its name by adding ri, which means chilgoza, which is one of the greatest specialty of Kinnaur and rang, which means mountain peak. The area is famous for its grape orchards and grape distilled alcohols and the innumerable trees with edible pines.

Lippa: Lippa having Taiti stream flowing by and the green grass which is considered nourishing for cattle and horses, is a favorite spot of Buddhists because of the three temples of Galdang Chhoikar, Dunguir and Kangyur and an old monastery dedicated to local deity Tangtashu.

Baspa River: The Baspa River is a fast flowing river that passes though the hills of Sangla. The surroundings of Baspa River provide an opportunity to view timely rainbows and brown trout. It is also an angler’s paradise for being home to a vast variety of fishes. Crossing this river is also quite an attraction amongst the visitors as this process involves ride in a basket along the way. Its surrounding areas also stand appropriate for campers and trekkers.

Kumaru Fort: The Kamru Fort is situated at an altitude of 2600 m above the sea level . It is located in the picturesque location of the Sangla Valley and is entered through a series of gates. At the main gate of this fort is a large image of Lord Buddha that welcomes you. There is also a wooden balcony at the top of this fort along with an idol of Kamakhya Devi installed in its third floor.This idol of Kamakhya Devi is said to have been brought from Guwahati. There is also a Badrinath Temple situated within the premises of this Kamru Fort. There is also a popular fair held in the place to honour the main deity of the temple. During this fair, the idol of the temple is taken to Gangotri, which is the origin of River Ganges.

Buddhist Monastery: This monastery lies near the Reckong Peo in Brelengi due to which it is also known as Brelengi Gompa. This monastery displays modern Buddhist edifice. It was constructed by the Mahabodhi Society in 1992 for facilitating the Dalai Lama to perform the Kalachakra ceremony. Near to this monastery is a 10 m statue of standing Buddha, visible from a considerable distance.

Sangla Meadow: The Sangla Meadows also known as Sangla Kanda is another natural sightseeing attraction in Sangla. This place is completely covered in greenery and surrounded by snow capped mountain ranges of the Himalayas. This place will also provide a view of the local huts of Himachal along with the customs and lifestyle of its local people.

From Kalka to Shimla by UNESCO World Heritage Kalka - Shimla Toy Train (Travel Time: 4h 45m   ( 658 meter to 2086 meters)

Further from Kalka, ride on 96 km the historic UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla toy train to Shimla, It provides one of the most scenic train journeys in India thrilling you, while it gradually winds its way steeply upwards along the narrow track, though lower lush green himalayan mountains and pine-Devdar forests.

The Incredible Journey includes 20 railway stations, 102 tunnels, 800 bridges, and an incredible 900 curves. The longest tunnel, which stretches for more than a kilometer, is near the main railway station at Barog.

The most spectacular scenery occurs from Barog to Shimla.

  • Shivalik Deluxe Express -- a premium express train with carpet, wide glass windows that open, cushioned seats, and relaxing music. It fits 120 passengers. Food is provided. There are no stops along the way.

  • Himalayan Queen -- a standard train service. Food isn't provided but can be purchased at the 10 or so stations that it stops at along the way. This train is the most suitable for those who like to get out and explore. You'll be able to take plenty of photos.

After breakfast you will visit Kufri (Himalayan Wild Life Zoo), the winter skiing capital & Naldehra. Visit the famous golf Course situated at 2200 meters above sea level. In the afternoon return back to Shimla. & proceed for Local sightseeing. Visit the Vice regal Lodge,  a heritage building that is situated on the Observatory Hill of Shimla. This building originally used to be the Residence of the then Viceroy of India, Lord Dufferin. The building is also known as ‘Rashtrapati Niwas’ & then proceeds for Mall Road, Shimla Church, Scandal Point, Town Hall, Gaiety Theatre etc. Return back to Hotel Surya for night stay.

This morning, proceed for a full day tour of Manali, visiting the 450 years old temple dedicated to Hadimba Devi, Jagatsukh and Vashist kund. After this, visit the Tibetan Monastery and the handicraft centre and walk to the nearby picturesque village of Vashist known for its hot sculpture springs. After enjoying these sights, return to your hotel for overnight stay.

After breakfast we drive to Nalagarh, meanwhile visit Chail famous for its World's Highest Cricket Ground & Polo Grounds. Shimla to Narkanda is 60 kms at the altitude of 2708 meters, You can have tea break at Narkanda, Keep descending and driving till Rampur which is further 60 kms away at altitude of 1005 meters. Rampur is home to Raja Virbhadra and Family, who have ruled over Himachal the most and famous for the Inernational Lavi fair.

Further Moving from Rampur Bushahar, you start gaining altitude and Reach Sarahan after tarvelling about 40 kms and you also gain altitude upto 2165 meters. sarahan is famous for Bhimakali temple and apple orchards.

After spending 15 minutes break in Sarahan, we move to Sangla located at 95 kms from Sarahan at altitude of 2680 meters.Sangla is a Picturesque town on the bank of Baspa River

Night Stay in Sangla Valley in Banjara camps.

After breakfast in Camp in Sanga, we proceed for Chitkul Via Rakcham. Chitkul is the most beautiful place in the globe, with gushing Rivulets, Lots of virgin beauty, Chitkul is also the last village on the Indo - Tibet Border.

Spend some time in Sangla Roaming about & Visit Kamaru Fort. In the after noon, proceed to Chitkul via Rakcham. Chitkul is the Last inhibited village of India on Indo-Tibet Border.Road is not in a condition from Karchham Dam onwards. Reach Chitkul by the late afternoon, Enjoy your walks here and enjoy the nature fully

In the Night, you have two options, Either to Stay in Chitkul or proceed back to Sangla camp.

We proceed from Chitkul to Kaza, the first Destination is Recongpeo at 65 kms, Recongpeo is the District Head-quarter of Kinnaur Valley, Tourists Stop here to get permit to Shipki-La, Further moving we proceed to Kalpa at further 13 kms at height of 2900 meters, In Kalpa we van have a tea break in the main market.

 

Kinner Kailash Darshan in Kalpa - 

While you cross Kalpa, have a look out to see the Holy Shivlinga of  Kinnaur kailash, some times because of the fog it is not easily visible, but if you are blessed, the 69 ft height shiv ling becomes visible from that distance not more than 1 inch.

After tea Break, we drive to Puh, which is at 77 kms from Kalpa at height of 2837 meters, further 11 kms is Village of Khab at altitude of 2831 meters, Keep enjoying the panoramic route. Khab is famous for Shipki-La (5669 m) approx 30 km detour from Khab. At Shipki-la, Satluj enters to India from Tibet.

 

Nako and Tabo UNESCO World Heritage Buddhist Monastery Tour

Further moving from Khab, we reach Nako, which is further 31 kms away. Nako is located at altitude of 3800 meters and famous for Buddhist monastery and Nako Lake, We reach Nako usually by Lunch, Have a lunch in Nako and Proceed further. .From Nako Road winds to Yangthang at 7 kms altitude of 3663 meters, Chango at 13 kms. At Chango enjoy and get surprised by Apple Orchards and Unique irrigation system for watering the crops.Further driving to Samdo at 26 kms from Chango. Samdo is famous for Sugar Point/Lepcha (Tibet Border).

Further proceed to Hoorling at 9 kms from Samdo, Before Hoorling, Gue village falls,Gue is known for the mummy of a Lama which is thousands of years old. 

Finally we reach Tabo located at 24 kms from Hoorling at altitude at 3050 meters, Tabo is Famous for a thousand year old monastery which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site


From Tabo, we proceed to Poh located at 10 kms at altitude of 3150 meters, Further 1 km is Atargo, from Atargo is the diversion for Dhankar, which is only 7 kms, Dhankar is very famous for monastery and Dhankar lake.

Finally we are getting close to Kaza, The Head-quarter of Spiti Valley. which is only left 23 kms at an altitude of 3600 meters
Reach Kaza in the night, Night Stay in Kaza Hotel

Wake up fresh in the morning and proceed to Dhankar Monastery, It’s a lovely monastery at a height of 12774 ft. Spend half an hour in the monastery, From the back of this monastery from where one gets the best view of the valley.

From Dhankar Monastery it took another hour or so to reach Kaza via the Kaza bridge & Visit Kaza Monastery. Have your lunch and proceed for Kibber around 14 KM from Kaza and then Key Monastery, so first visit Kibber, then visit Key monastery.

Kibber is almost at a height of around 14500 ft and a very beautiful village with lovely people, greenery, farms. These small small places are fully developed, with lovely houses, and government schools which implies full education. Approximate population of this village is around 300.

Also visit Langza at 20 kms from Kaza (4400 m), Enjoy the Hamlet settled in lovely backdrop, Spend half an hour in Langza and Proceed to Komic Village at 7 kms further at altitude of 4513 meters. Komic enjoys its status as Highest Village of Asia.

Enjoy some time in Komic Village and proceed further to see the world Famous Key Monastery at 7 kms further & altitude of 4116 meters.

Night Stay in Kaza & Return to shimla if road conditions not good.


Now we proceed onwards for the dream drive to Manali thrugh Kunzum Pass (4551 meters) & Rohtang pass(3938 meters). The road is motorable during Summers till Kunzum pass is open.Drive is also the the most beautiful and most adventurous one.After Kaza, there is a diversion to Rohtang pass from Rangrik/Key Monastery junction & our destination is Losar around 58 KM from Kaza, which is a Lovely small village, After Losar, there are numerous tiny small places like Rangrik, Spurik, Hal, Pogmo, Hansa and many little places with meagre population. Around 15-20 minutes break in Losar and then on towards Kunzum Pass

The view gets more and more better towards Kunzum pas. The Kunzum pass at a height of around 15060 ft, with snow top peaks and a Buddhist temple.


Next to Kunzum Pass, next destination is Batal, where we can have lunch break at a enjoying the Lovely view on the banks of the Chandra river.

After half an hour lunch break at Battal, Proceed and after about 1.5 hours drive reach Chatru, which is Another nice small village with a couple of Dhaba for tea and snacks. Had a cup of tea and went in for a lovely walk around the town. Chattru at a height of around 13000 ft, Just 32 KM from Rohtang Pass,Next Destination is Gramphu , lots of small as well as big waterfalls welcome you.Once Gramphu is crossed, then starts the steep rise to Rohtang Pass. 

As You approach Rohtang Pass, greenery starts to appear and the dryness starts to disappear. Lovely view of small waterfalls in distant mountains on the opposite side, makes the journey lovely.
 
A very important thing about Rohtang pass is while on one side one can see the entire Spiti and the entire Lahaul valley, on the other side, the western part of Himachal including Manali, Kullu.Because of the the construction of Rohtang tunnel by BRO, once you reach up the Rohtang, numerous blockages and full mudd filled road.

Cross Rohtang pass and have a tea break as it will take approx 45 minutes to Manali.

Note:

  • Rohtang pass is 51 Kms | 2hrs one way. It is not accessible for almost eight months in a year as it is covered by snow. We generally visit the snow point on Rohtang Road subject to weather conditions.
  • Solang Valley: All the adventure sports at Solang Valley are on direct payment basis & subject to weather conditions.

After breakfast at hotel, proceed for a half day sightseeing tour. Visit Vashishtha KundHidimba TempleManu Mandir and Gayatri Mandir.

 

Rest of the day is at leisure for independent activities. Stay overnight at the hotel in Manali.

After breakfast, We will start the return journey to Chandigarh, proceed to Chandigarh. Visit the famous Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, Rose Garden, Elante Mall-North India's Biggest Mall. You can spend your evening at the City Plaza, Sector-17.
