Places to visit in Wayanad

Soochipara Falls: Soochipara Falls also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls is a three-tiered waterfall in Vellarimala, Wayanad, surrounded by Deciduous, Evergreen and Montane forests. Soochipara Falls is a three-tiered waterfall, which cascades at its best between the months of June and January. The site is also popular with rock climbers apart from picnickers.

 

Banasura Sagar Dam: Banasura Sagar dam across the Karamanathodu River, a tributary of River Kabini, in Kalpetta, is considered to be the largest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asia. The dam is ideally placed in the foothills of Banasura hills. The dam has been constructed on Banasura Lake, situated amidst the Banasura Hills. It is believed that these hills were named after the demon king Banasura, who was the son of king Mahabali. It is the biggest earth dam in the country and is ranked second in Asia. The dam lengthens to a spacious part with crystal clear flow of waters.

 

Wayanad thirunelli temple: The Thirunelli Temple, devoted to Lord Vishnu, is situated beneath the Brahmagiri Hills in a valley. This temple has been constructed in the Kerala architectural style, with more than 30 granite pieces supporting the main shrine. The Panchatheertham, located at the southern side of the temple, is believed to be the meeting point of five rivers.

 

Phantom Rock: Phantom Rock (Cheengeri Mala) is a renowned place that is as unique as its names. It's an archaeological wonder that can be hardly spotted anywhere else in the world. The rock is naturally casted in the shape of the phantom skull and hence is famous by the name of Phantom Rock all over the world. The skull shaped rock is locally called as Cheengeri Mala and offers great photographic opportunities.

 

Pookot Lake: Pookot Lake is a scenic lake in Wayanad district, Kerala, South India. The lake is surrounded by forests, and boating is allowed. Recent commercial modernizations have removed some of its wilderness charms.

 

Chain Tree: This large Ficus Tree called the Chain Tree, bound by a prominent chain is an interesting excursion spot, approximately 15 km. from Kalpetta.

 

Edakkal Caves: Edakkal Caves are two natural caves at a remote location at Edakkal, 25 km from Kalpetta in the Wayanad district of Kerala in India's Western Ghats. They lie 1,200 meters above sea level on Ambukutty Hills, beside an ancient trade route connecting the high mountains of Mysore to the ports of the Malabar coast. Inside the caves are pictorial writings believed to be dating to at least 5000 BC.

 

Ambalavayal Museum: Ambalavayal Heritage Museum, the archaeological museum in Wayanad, has one of Kerala's largest collections of the remnants of an era dating back to the 2nd century A.D. The exhibits here are evidences of an advanced civilization that existed in the mountains of Wayanad. The articles on display are a fascination for the historian, the archaeologist and the ordinary man alike.

 

Lakkidi: One of the highest locations in Wayanad, Lakkidi also commands a picturesque scenery. It is about 58 kms. north east of Kozhikode and five kms. south of Vythiri. Lakkidi, the gate way of Wayanad, lies atop Thamarassery, a ghat pass at an elevation of 700 m. above mean sea level.The lofty mountain peaks, the gurging stream, luxuriant vegetation and the bird's eye view of the deep valley on the south, with its winding roads, are breath taking. The 12 kms.long journey from Adivaram to Lakkidi through ghat road with nine hairpin bends amidst thick forests, is a fascinating experience.

 

Muthanga Wild Life Sanctuary: Muthanga, Which is 16 kms east of Sulthan Bathery, is located very near to the Karnadaka border. Wild forests covering an area of 345 sq.kms form the Muthanga wild life sanctuary; the biggest abode of wild animals in Malabar. Elephant, spotted deer, bison, tiger, cheeta, wild bear, etc. are found in this sanctuary. The forest Department has facilities for providing elephant rides to tourists, here

 

Things to do in Wayanad
