Udupi also known as Odipu in Tulu, is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka. Udupi district is located in the coastal region of Western Ghats about 60 km from Mangalore. It is the administrative headquarters of Udupi District. Udupi is notable for the Krishna Temple and lends its name to the popular Udupi cuisine. This cuisine was developed by Shivalli Madhwa Brahmins who cooked food for Lord Krishna, and at Krishna Matha in Udupi, the food is provided free. Udupi is known for the Krishna Mutt (Temple of Lord Krishna). Udupi is also world famous for its world class cuisine.

The three northern taluks, Udupi, Kundapur and Karkal, were separated from Dakshina Kannada District to form Udupi district. Udupi is a famous pilgrimage, particularly for Asta Math, i.e. eight Matts and Sri Krishna Temple. Udupi is also one of oldest religious educational centers.


 Krishna Mutt :  Udupi is known for the Krishna Mutt (Temple of Lord Krishna). The Krishna Mutt was founded by the Shri Madhvacharya , a Vaishnavite saint in the 13th century. The Ashta Mathas (set of 8 religious organizations manage the temple administration,  and the daily sevas. According to legned, the statue of Sri Krishna in the famous temple here is believed to have turned around to give darshana to the kuruba devotee, Kanakadasa , who was not allowed to enter the temple because Kanakadasa belonged to a different caste. Each of the Ashta Mathas performs temple management activities for two years on rotation.

Shri Durga Temple at Indrali: Kunjaru is a hamlet in Kurkaal grama, situated 6-7 miles (approximately 11kms) to the south-east of Shree Krishna’s Udupi. This small village is reputed for its sanctity owing to the celebrated Durga Temple on a high hillock popularly known by the names: Kunjarugiri, Durgabetta and Vimanagiri. This temple is most famous and well known temple of Karnatak state

Neelavara is a beautiful place located at a distance of 18 Km from Udupi near Brahmavara in Udupi district. Neelavara lies between Kunjal village in the south and River Sita in the north. Malpe Beach:  Malpe Beach in Karnataka is one of the unexplored beaches in India. Located at a distance of 66 kms from Mangalore and about 6 kms from Udupi, the Malpe Beach is an undefiled virgin beach. There are four rocky islands which are close to the mainland of malpe beach among which St. Mary's island is more popular. There is ferry service available to the off shore St. Mary's islands.


Krishna Temple: Udupi Sri Krishna Matha  is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to god Krishna located in the city of Udupi in Karnataka, India. Here there is a holy temple of Sri Krishna and this is the birthplace of Sri Madhwacharya, founder of Dwaita Philosophy and one of the three great Acharyas. Udupi is first among the seven places of pilgrimages. Thousands of pious devotees throng the Krishna temple all round the year to catch a glimpse of Lord Krishna. The unique feature of Shree Krishna Mutt temple is that the Lord is worshipped only through a window with nine holes called the Navagraha Kitiki.


Chandramouleshwara Temple: Shri Anantheswara temple is the most ancient temple of Udupi. It is interesting to note that this village derived the name, Shivalli from this temple.  Chandramouleshwar Temple is very near Unkal circle and Unkal Lake .
