20. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary – Munnar, Kerala

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a unique protected area located in the rain shadow region in the eastern slope of Western Ghats, adjoining Tamilnadu. The area is diverse in eco systems and rich in ethnic cultural heritage. A unique thorny scrub forest with xerophyte species, Chinnar is the habitat for the endangered Giant Grizzled Squirrel of India. Their total number here would be less than 200. Located in the rain shadow area of the Western Ghats, unlike other sanctuaries in Kerala, Chinnar gets only less than two months of rain every year. Rich in wildlife, the mixed deciduous forests here are ideal for trekking.  The 90 km sq sanctuary is unique with its floral, ecological, geomorphologic and cultural significance. Chinnar is a unique thorny scrub forest with xerophyte species. This sanctuary is one among the 12 protected areas of Kerala. An ideal place for trekking, Chinnar is located in the rainshadow region of Western Ghats and receives very less amount of rainfall every year. 34 species of Mammals live here, including many Panthers and Spotted deer, 50 -60 Indian Elephants, Gaur, Tigers, Sambar Deer, Common langur, Bonnet Macaque, Hanuman monkey, threatened Nilgiri Tahr, vulnerable Rusty-spotted Cats and about 240 of the only vulnerable Grizzled Giant Squirrels in Kerala, 245 species of birds including Yellow-throated Bulbuls.

Dandeli, a small sleepy town in the western ghats of North-West India in the state of Karnataka is really proud of beholding the magnanimous wild land under the tiger project. The Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary what the name of the reserve is; actually locating in Uttarkannada district of Karnataka which is abundantly rich in wide varieties of flora and fauna. Being spread over an area of 834.16 sq.km, this reserve is reputed as the largest sanctuary in Karnataka. The sanctuary is also counted amongst the most attractive tourist spots in Karnataka. Numerous tourists from Karnataka and all over the India come and visit the sanctuaries every year to witness the wildlife while having jungle safari, or from a boat. The calm and blissful serenity all across the reserve with a diversified varieties of floras and faunas are the added attraction to the area.

With a variance in wild species, the reserve area of Dandeli actually brings a variety of Bonnet Macaque, deer (barking, mouse and spotted), Indian bison, Malabar giant squirrel, Malabar Civet, pangolin and sloth bear to make the reserve as their ideal home in the forests. The Black Panther, elephants and tigers are rare species to be found in the Dandeli National Park. Reptiles sighted in the park include the King Cobra, Python, Krait, Rat snake and Viper. There are more than 200 species of birds found in the region as to include Malabar Trogon, Pompador Pigeon, Paradise Fly Catcher Ceylon Frogmouth, Great Pied Hornbill, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Emerald Dove and Lesser Adjutant Stork.

Chikhaldara Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Amaravati district of Maharashtra and forms one of the popular excursions from the Amravati city. The sanctuary forms a part of the sole hill station of the Vidarbha region, characterized by beautiful lakes, serene lakes and cascading waterfalls. Chikhaldara Wildlife Sanctuary boasts of a rich and varied wildlife and has been named after the spot known as 'Keechaka'.  the sanctuary was known as 'Keechakadara Wildlife Sanctuary'. However, with time, the name got distorted and the sanctuary came to be known as Chikhaldara. Apart from being home to exotic wildlife, Chikhaldara also claims the distinction of being the only coffee growing area in the entire state of Maharashtra. The sanctuary also offers panoramic views of the valley situated below. There are a number of places near it that are definitely worth having a look at. Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park is a protected area located in the Anaimalai Hills of Pollachi, Valparai and Udumalpet taluks of Coimbatore District and Tirupur District, Tamil Nadu state, South India. With an area of 958 sq.KM, it is rich in flora and fauna.This protected area constitutes the most important watershed for the agricultural economy and power supply. Major reservoirs like Parambikulam, Aliyar, Thirumurthi, Upper Aliyar, Kadambarai, Sholayar and Amravati are fed by the perennial rivers which originate from the Sanctuary. The ever-changing topography of this wildlife sanctuary consist dry scrub forests, savannah forests, moist deciduous and evergreen forests and grasslands at high elevations. Teak used to be plentiful in these forests and as a source of revenue. By 1856, efforts were made to regenerate these plantations. Wildlife reserve provides habitat for animals such as panthers, tigers, elephants, spotted deer, civet cats, and wild boars. Besides, the region is referred as birder's paradise as it houses contrasting varieties of birds, which include The Black Headed Oriole, Rocket-tailed Drongo, Tree Pie, Spotted Dove and Red Whiskered Bulbul.

Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve ocated in the Southern Western Ghats in Tirunelveli district and Kanyakumari District in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu,  Kalakkad is the 17th Tiger Reserve in India and the only one in Tamil Nadu, was declared as Tiger Reserve in 1988. Larger mammals such as gaurs, elephants, tigers and endemic primates such as the Nilgiri langur are to be found in the Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary.
